I am going to enjoy seeing this. I hate working on gearboxes simply because
they can get very complicated when putting back together and once you start
are committed to the whole thing.. But at the same time i love the
challenge. In my limited exposure to them i have found with a bit of
tweaking and bearings you can get an average gearbox to run very well. Worn
gears are a real pain as can be extremely expensive and always seem to wear
in pairs.

Quite interesting to see this! How do you find time for all your
projects??
I suppose the only way to learn is to get stuck in. I plan on disassembling
the gearbox of a mk1 Fiesta soon to see what gremlins lie within. It is
probably beyond saving though. It will be interesting to watch your
progress with this one.
