Credit where credit is due roach you look after your disco well buddy. But
those discos break people’s hearts bloody seals round windows going
sunroofs leaking bonding round the windscreen and that’s not even the rot
as your tackling it now. Speaking from experience get a 110 county station
wagon get the chassey galvanised and she will be a super low maintaince
Landy she will be a little better on the diesel too. But I must say lands
are so cool as a utility vechele and as you said yours has been going
twenty years and she’s still got another two laps round the planet left in
her lol. When I was in Kenya with the army I got issued a defender with one
million one thousand and fifty eight miles on the clock and I hammered her
for three months round the bush and she never missed a tap mate ATB. Sorry
to go on lol

Steve Brown says:

Hi Roach.
Just a couple of points to note ( apologies in advance if you already know)
when welding galvanised steel in confined spaces,( ie inside the car) be
aware that the zinc gives off noxious fumes when its welded, its known as
‘zinc fever’ in welding circles, and its not good for you! Make sure you
have good ventilation!
Rather than using red oxide primer, use a ‘weld thru’ zinc primer,
specially designed for welding,so none of the aforementioned issues.
As for your underseal,in this weather, stand the container in a bucket of
hot water for an hour before use,it will go on much easier!

Hows the the ‘new’ roof top tent working out?

the old girl is looking good Roach, I can’t wait to see your big trip !
have you ever tried undercoating your vehicle ? I get mine Rust Checked
(Undercoating) every year, costs $120 so prob like 70 Euro. Mines a 2010
(so quite a bit newer) but doesn’t have any rust, maybe just an idea,
unless you think it’s too far gone now. All the best from across the pond !

Nice work Mike,I welded all the arches, boot floor outriggers and other bits
on my first disco 6 months later someone drove into me a 50mph and wrote it
of (bastard).
I used cardboard to make a template for all the patches then just transfer
the shape to your steel ,rivets to hold the plate in place work well, they
hold the plate tight against the body with no gaps ,just paint over them
with seam sealer after you have done the welding.I used waxoyl to rustproof
mine after the welding, its a bastard to apply but its ment to stop the rust.
I was lucky to get a re-imported japanese disco with no rust and only 39000
miles with my insurance payout, still going strong after 5 years, great
trucks.
Cheers Jason

Great video dude. Really glad to see another video from you. Looking good
on the rust repair man. Your doing a great job self learning and taking in
knowledge about the land rover. I hope your doing well and can’t wait to
see what you up to next. I did see a product (i can’t recall the name,
maybe you can hunt it down) but its basically like a spray on plastic type
substance you can put on cars, and the underside also. I guess its like a
tar. And people said it does add some life span and repels water really
well. I guess similar to just quality rubberised paint. Maybe its worth a
look. 🙂
All the best, Robert

Nice work Roach.I really enjoy your channel.I always walk away with some
new ideas. Any overnight camps in the works?

Jack Chapman says:

I did similar repairs on my ’72 Ford Bronco in which the floor boards
rusted out! I had a source for stainless steel, and lined and used rivets
to hold them in place! It took a lot of work, but held up!

hi roach lovin the videos this tip may help its one i was given for when i
welded my old camper was when doing the patches do a chain off spot welds
then move about two inch and work around the panel keep doing it and fill
in the gaps till fully welded it saved me blowing holes through witch i did
a lot at first as im no welder lol also a lot less grinding keep the videos
coming cheers

nice job Roach… 2 thumbs up

Guy T says:

Good video on rust repair. One thing I would recommend is buying a tar like
brush on paint. You can buy it from most automotive stores most cars come
from factory with this painted on the underside of cars and wheel arches to
act as a barrier between the metal and weather. I have used it on trailer
and have to say after 1 year I peeled it of in one section and the metal
looked the same as when I originally paint over it. Just a thought.
