Today we tackle replacing the transmission cooler lines on our 1998 Land Rover Discovery 1. This is a brief overview of the process with comedic filler provided by a few poorly executed Shawshank Redemption references.

Robert Barnes says:

Hey! Have to replace my upper trans cooler line. Do you remember what you had to do to get the upper hose off the transmission? I haven’t attempted yet but it looks tricky! Also, was it a 36mm fitting?

john Kemple says:

At least it's not rusty under there..

Arno G says:

Question brother. Do you have to drain the Trans Pan to replace the cooler hoses?

Circular Pizzabox says:

Are those fender flares from a 2000? I have a 1995 5 speed 3.9L. Bought it new, put and OME lift and cooper STT’s and I love the damn thing. We are a Rover family, so naturally I see nothing wrong with the constant wrenching on them.

Joe Wright says:

Little trick for those that struggle to get fan off and a lot of people do. Get a larger fan wrench put it down against the bolts that hold pulley behind fan on mark where those bolts are best you can then drill holes in larger fan wrench where you marked. Now use that wrench to keep pulley from spinning by fitting over bolts in pulley take 36mm fan wrench and brake loose watch fingers really easy to slam to wrenches together when it brakes loose.

your 4runner shirt! lol yes

Steve Jones says:

A Disco 1 is a much better choice as a DIY mechanic than the later models. It's ultimately a pushrod V8, and it's not tricked out with super complex electronics and the need for a workshop full of special diagnostic equipment and tools.

dante nicholas says:

Love the videos! Very helpful!
I just replaced my oil cooler lines, and I also had to replace o rings at either end of the lines. In your video there’s no mention of this. Did you replace them?

B33GFT says:

Awesome man, good job!

Dominic Whitehead says:

Lol at the house roof back drop
Love it

Gantry Crane says:

These videos are hilarious.

Stuart Davis says:

Hey mate I have a similar one down under in Perth, Australia, runs on LPG and petrol. Very capable off road i find (with a Detroit locker) and great to tow with. Cheap parts – but lots of work….. I had similar issues with the windows – dry joints in the window ECU – pretty common apparently. Easy fix with a soldering iron. As for the leaky transfer case often it’s a o ring on the intermediate shaft – look up Brittanica restorations and LT230 on YouTube he does heaps of them. They are quite involved if you do full rebuild FYI. Good luck and drop me a line anytime you like. Keep up the vids!

Matthew Zimmerman says:

Which of your 4x4s do you prefer to wrench on? In my experience, some manufacturers make cars that are easier to work on than others. My 4Runner usually doesn’t fight me too much when I’m “under the hood” but all the Fords I have had to fix were a real pain.

Silas Williams says:

Love the tutorial type videos! Just got a 97 disco given to me from my grandma and I’m trying to learn as much about them as possible.

Keegen Mueller says:

Thank you!!!! Loving your videos man!!!

Daniel Click says:

Hey man i like the videos i have a 95 disco and i cant seem to find the rave manual. Do you know where i can purchase one? Thanks

17Nomad says:

I know it seems like extra work but changing the filter would have been good as well.
Dropping the exhaust is simple. Just Pres pray the bolts with PB blaster.

Moving the cross member can be simple too by using grease on the inner frame and a dead blow hammer to scoot the bar forward.
The filter is cheap.
