4xOverland says:

The Land Rover Troopy 75 and 78 has an interior cab capacity of 4,5 cubic
meters, whereas the Defender is about 4,2. I’m not guessing. “The roomiest
vehicle”. That’s quite a statement. The S3 is without question the most
cramped vehicle I have ever driven. I’ve also driven the S3 on sandy desert
tracks – and it is really hard work. Only for the tough.

4xOverland says:

Bill Soucess. I agree and understand you completely! I do. I owned a
Defender for 8 years. I owned a Range Rover for eight. But my guess is that
you are from the UK. In the UK, a Toyota is an ordinary mass produced
family car, many of which are very dull. But in South Africa and Australia
they make the most reliable and best overland 4×4 trucks – and they also
make some quite good cars as well. As for me, I get EXACTLY the same thrill
I once got at a lonely camp site when I looked at my Defender – now with my
Land Cruiser. So our perspectives are different, and I assure you, while
you find it difficult to understand, a Toyota can also make you feel that
way. A Land Cruiser is a fantastic vehicle, and like the Land Rover, gives
sincere pleasure to many owners that love them. No difference whatsoever on
how you feel about your 130.

Gavin Irvine says:

in what way is a defender unreliable i just sounds like the same shit the
average american states (yes i know you’re an australian) but realy though
what makes it any less reliable

Edo Dijkgraaf says:

At the end of your beautiful edited video you forgot to say: “This video
was brought to you by Toyota.”

Spireitebill says:

It is said that 80% of all land rovers (to include Range rover) ever made
are still on the road. What do you reckon the % of Troopies still on the
road is? Bit less I’d reckon.
And I’m sure land rovers have been around a tad longer perhaps? Oh and I’ve
pulled a fair few troopies out of the ditches they got stuck in during bad
snows. Not seen many troopies pulling land rovers out of ditches though to
be honest. But you seem to be an Aussie and wouldn’t really know better, so
you’re forgiven.

Lee McDonald says:

It irks me that Toyota don give us their 78/80/105 types in the UK, yes we
hardly have any use for them but an option would still be nice for those of
us who like character and after this year we won’t even have the Defender
as an option, just motorways full of dreary German auto barges….which I
currently own by the way, but this WILL be changing.

Bart Bukowiecki says:

Are you an off road adventurer? you’ll be need ing one of these …

Grant Baker says:

Toyota is the most reliable 4×4 in Australia. Parts and servicing is second
to none here. I have owned 3 Hilux models and I find them reliable, almost
bullet proof, and heaps of fun to try to destroy….if they weren’t any
good I wouldn’t waste my money on them. BTW….I am about to take delivery
of my 4th Hilux at the end of this month. In Australia they’re called
‘Unbreakable’, and for good reason. I just loooove my Hilux :-)

Ewald Stander says:

+4xOverland I think in future you should state from the outset that this is
a pro Toyota Youtube channel. What started as a product review turned into
a comparison/ brand bashing. And THAT was not necessary. Dont you think
Land Rover owners just want to see a awesome custom vehicle without being
bashed? Do you realize that you are pushing a lot of people away by doing
so?
Well i’m pretty sure you will put me in my place shortly.

armouredcockroach says:

I love it, Guess I’m one of Land Rover Crew (HaHa!!) Atb Andrew keep the
films coming.

arriviste2020 says:

Interesting video and comments. Does anyone ever view a trans-continental
or off-road vehicle as a means to an end? Virtually all 4 X 4 vehicles can
be improved, it just depends upon expectations. The manufacturers never
intended for their vehicles to do what everyone thinks they should
do…..Unimog being an exception.Toyota Land Cruisers don’t like deep
mud,….time in Africa brought that lesson home. “New” Land Rovers are like
Toyota’s,…land barges. I will say that Land Rovers have lost their way
for the longest time. Why they cannot produce a reliable and useful engine
with some decent power, is beyond my comprehension. I have a 1967 109
ex-Military,Land Rover,(soft top) and it has never broken down. Yes, it is
crude, simplistic and runs all day at 70mph when the road allows it.The
point is, it was built to a given spec, and those specs never included
hammering it all over West Africa., which it seemed to thrive on. Best bet,
to get the biggest (and most reliable bang) for your buck, is to build what
you want.:;)

Hannibal says:

Nissan Patrol GU 4.2 all the way. nothing comes even near to compare.

reece the gamer says:

Land Rover will eat the Toyota in every way that’s a fact.

Steinwaygrande says:

Troopy is prone to rolling over where as the Landrover Defender will go
places that a troopie wont go. I live in Australia and talk from personal
experience. Hence the reason I will continue to use my Landrover 110 series
over a Toyota Troopie

NationalLibertyParty says:

Land rovers are the best! people say they leak i say there marking their
territory :)

Levi Mattfield says:

If only they used Cummins in these beasts…

Bill Soucess says:

The thing is when I step outside from where ever I may be, I get a feeling
I can’t describe when I see my defender 130 parked and I know that its
mine. Your thoughts might be true, but It’s a Toyota A TOYOTA !!! AHhhhh I
need iconic. Columbus sailed a Toyota.. Edward J. Smith drove the Land
Rover which one do you remember being iconic?

1TonTaco says:

Another great video keep it dude!!!

Spencer Howard says:

It looks great and I’m sure it is. But when I get a second hand car that is
more than 10 years old I will go for the landcruiser, it doesn’t need to
compensate for anything because you know exactly what is has to offer
unbeatable reliability and toughness. I get the appeal of land rover but I
would rather the practicality of something that will last a long time.

Khaled AlHammadi says:

Totally agree with you on the reliability issue. I come from Dubai and many
of my friends own defenders. Almost all of them suffered from the
reliability issues although their car models are 2009 and later. As much as
I love land but I am sad for its poor reliabilty which made it unique in
the past. Lets hope that the new one keeps the essence of the defender and
better power and reliability. Honestly, it is not fair to compare anything
with toyota in terms of reliability because they are way better than the
others

GringoDoc says:

Fascinating ! Thoroughly enjoyed this honest evaluation.

Tim Jones says:

The is a company in Ft Lauderdale, S Florida that does Land Rover
conversions. They can do anything you can imagine. They do it right first
time. For 25yrs they know everything you need to know. Strongly
recommended, they make your LAND ROVER dreams a reality. I know, cause I’m
a customer. I have a tricked out Defender and a Disco.

sean octane says:

i have a land crusiers and its pushing 300k miles and still drives fine! i
doubt a RR can do that!

Max McTabish says:

So what if you bought the V8 Defender? Is it still underpowered?

MrLazynko says:

awesome car . anyone know price ?

Zeus Canine says:

Land Rover all day.
Great video

Abel Harbour says:

I love the Defender and always will. I’m not sure I agree completely about
the reliability problems but I will agree that the engine options are
pathetic. It used to be that any engine that was in the Range Rover and
Discovery was avalible for the defender but in the mid 2000’s Landrover
seemed to forgot all about the Defender and gave the Range Rovers and
Discovery’s V6 and V8 diesel option which would have been great for the
Defender (especially for 110 and 130) but they made the only diesel
availible a 2.5 then 2.4 and now 2.2. Not only that but it was left so far
behind that 2015 will see it’s production stopped because it no longer
meets EU safety. It didn’t need to be that way but its Land Rovers own
fault. If Toyota could do it with the likes of the Troopy why not Land
Rover and the much loved Defender.

montwolfman says:

Let me think about your statement; the Landy is fantastic but it’s not, in
the same breath no less. My opinion is that Toyota (older and newer alike)
are a superior vehicle to anything British, particularly Land-anything in
all aspects i.e. mechanical reliability, handling, electrical design and
dependability. Don’t feel bad though, all you Land lovers, someone has to
take second place between these two manufacturers. Naturally Mercedes is in
a untouchable leag of it’s own, unaffordably and regrettably so.

tpvalley says:

I mean use all the space behind the front seats for the camper….I think.

TheAbsoluteZ33RO says:

Land Rover looks great, and is very good off road but at the end of the day
I personally like the Prado as well.

M anchap says:

Nice looking 4X4 but if you live in the UK there almost impossible to run
ie fuel wise , shame because I really miss my Disco TD5 ans 300

David W says:

Toyota is plain Jap crap, Land Rover all the way….didn’t see any Toyota
rubbish in any of the worlds armed forces where Defender dominates Landys
just tougher all up , had Toyota Jap rubbish sold it went for the best….

Keine Namen says:

Same Mistake many people do with the Land Rover…..it doesn´t like to be
overloaded….especially not on the roof

Moparman90 says:

Great well spoken host but he looks like he may expire on his expedition!

Jarmo Steenhuis says:

what price is it?

Maverick TD90 says:

In my experience, which isn’t too extensive, the Defender is generally a
better off-roader. When it comes to mud and wading, the Defender wins
hands-down. I’ve had cruiser owners ask me to drive through thick mud and
rivers 1st incase they need a pull (no jokes, after the heavy rains we had
in Namibia a few years back). As far as comfort goes, Cruiser takes it by a
mile. As far as reliability goes, I have absolute faith in the
Defender.Usually when something goes wrong, it’s simple to fix, you just
need to know where to look. On open road, the cruiser wins, once again. But
last I checked, we don’t buy these cars for highway use. To conclude: If
you want a highly capable 4×4 that you don’t have to understand at a
mechanical level, that’s comfortable and quiet and is a serious treat to
drive generally, go for a Cruiser. If you want a car that is a true, rough
and tough pioneer, keeping in mind she won’t be the most comfortable, she
won’t be quite and you enjoy understanding how your car works, buy the
defender. The defender is for the self-sufficient man, the cruiser is more
suited to someone that would rather take their car in to the garage when
something is up. No problem with either, just comes down to preference.

That raising bed is very clever

phil price says:

I don’t share your view of the toyota Landcruiser
The Landrover will tow the toyota to the scrap merchant when it’s ready to
go.
The Landrover can then live on for decades
I know which one comes apart the easiest.
I know which one looks the best.
I know which one has a real heart and personality.
I could never love a Toyota.

WorldWideWanderlust says:

Thanks for sharing. For someone who build 3 touring vehicles himself (1x
Pajero, 2x Patrol GQ) I enjoyed watching this. Even though that Defender
looks a bit too macho for me but hey, that’s what happens if you bolt
everything on it and keep it all in dark grey. 😉 I’d have liked to see
some of the details when it comes to the conversions though.

RC Crawler Workbench says:

They are both super cool. That bush package is off the hook.

David Krome says:

So the Landcruiser Dual Cab would be the ultimate then

sean octane says:

i love this vid, very honest!

major gsd says:

why is it that this conflict between land rover defender lovers and
landcruiser lovers just goes on. cut out this bull shit it’s just a wast of
time. i started at a british layland dealer as soon as i left school and i
worked on land rovers. i am 52 now and i have owned more land rovers than
you think and now land rover are too electronic and thus difficult to fix
by the bush mechanic. i now drive a landcruiser but i still love to see a
defender or series-3 going down the road.leave Andrew alone and learn from
him.

ZondaF355 says:

I would like to see ICON do an overland version. They build the best 4×4 in
the world IMO. New chassis, body, engine, etc. I really love this vehicle
if it were crossed with ICON.
