Kia Sportage Exhaust Manifold & Catalytic Converter Replacement

Kia Sportage Exhaust Manifold & Catalytic Converter Replacement

I’m attempting to solve the mystery of why this car won’t pass it’s smog check here in California where the new rules require that all of your engine readiness monitors are set (except the EVAP). This car will not set the catalytic converter monitor for no man, and it eventually gives you a P0422 code, which is Main Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold. How will I solve this problem?

Great vids! Would you happen to know offhand what size/type of nuts are required for the 5 studs on top the 1st cat? The ones from kia are 5 buck each. Thinking i might get some from local parts store instead? Its been about a year since i replaced gaskets and reused all the existing hardware. I now believe the flange has slightly separated or one of those 5 nuts has come off. Big leak. Manifolds not cracked. Maybe i didnt torque em enough last time?

Nice! Ive had the exact same error code but my cat is fine. Two years later I smell smoke when i start the car.

Toby Dyes says:

22mm and a 7/8 r difference that's why u strippers it and that's what you did

Toby Dyes says:

You have to heat it up common sense

John Smith says:

Great video. Sometimes we learn as we go, nothing wrong with that. Bad upstream o2 sensor will ruin the cat after awhile. I was changing the o2 sensor on my daughters Sportage and FINALLY got it out but stripped the manifold threads beyond repair so have to replace manifold. That's likely what would have happened to you anyway.

Robert Nuzum says:

I was hoping by the title that you were going to show the procedure for replacing the Catalytic Converter…..

Travis Shedd says:

did the new manifold crack, dads kia  has had few manifilds and all have cracked. its a common problem with this style/year kia, hes building a header for it

Kid, thanks as always for a great instructional video. Also appreciate your honesty with your diagnostics. We all learn from your efforts and they are much appreciated. Keep up the good work and I'm looking forward to another E46 vid!

Good afternoon. I really enjoyed your real world experience. The dreaded PO420. I particularly liked the way u substituted the BMW O2 sensor. What kind of PC based scan tool r u using? Had an Xterra that wouldn't run the cat monitor. Turned out to b a vacuum leak and idle switch not plugged in all the way. As soon as I fixed those problems it ran the monitor within 7 or 8 miles of drive cycle driving. Btw, before the repair, it set a pending PO300. So cat monitor will not complete if stft is not happy. Thanx again!
