He answer my question about it being an interferance engine

Uncle Rice says:

Did it burn oil before you worked on it? If the exhaust was blue, then yeah it was burning oil and you may need rings. Can you tell if your valves are closing properly? Were they clean up when you had the head done? Did it used to run?

Paul Terrier Jr says:

i have a 1997 one i did the head gasket and had the head re surfaced and put it back together now i still cant get it started i get 75 psi out of the first two the 3 and 4 i get 100 psi u think i need rings and this was after i put oil down in the cylinders of one and two i go 50 first then the 75 psi.

Uncle Rice says:

Apparently all 1993–2004 KIA Sportage are first generation and have the Mazda FE motors and are thus non-interference. After that they have a different motor and may well be interference motors as other KIA models of my vintage have motors that are interference motors.

cuttingedge301 says:

So is there anyway to identify if the motor is and interference motor? If so, what is the best way?

Uncle Rice says:

Yes. I got it fixed just in time. Old blue is leaking oil out the front of the engine now. We’re working on the Moldy Jeep now. Probably get cold star footage tomorrow.
