My engine is still running strong with 175,000 miles on it. I contribute this to using Mobil One and using a Perma-Cool oil filter relocation kit with oil cooler. I noticed the other day when I started mine after sitting for a couple of weeks a small cloud of light smoke and initially the engine was running a bit rough…Maybe it needed to get the oil back up into the top of the engine and the valve train pumped up.

TheBGravit says:

If the replacement exhaust manifold/header does not have a Cat installed near the exhaust ports (within 16″?) of the engine and O2 ports. Then I would anticipate trouble with the O2 Sensor Circuit and fuel adjustment issues (Check Engine). If a shorty header was available that would allow for the proper placement of the cat near the engine and a O2 port before and after the first cat you should not have any real problems that I can foresee. This is important if your car is inspected.

I found an exhaust manifold from Pacesetter it’s bit more pricey but idk lol maybe… At the same time I want to replace the valve train because notice the valve chatter in my Rio too and it usually sounds off when I first start the engine in the morning…

I too have a 2002 Kia Rio and have been considering my options as far as exhaust systems lol I’ve seen the megan racing headers but now I’m not so sure about purchasing it…

oops meant cast iron exhaust…:)

Basically have done nothing for the clatter you hear on the video. The Camera picks up that sound better than my ears. I know the noise increased after I went to the Bosal exhaust manifold. The stainless steel pipes transfer sound better than the factory cast iron intake. Since my Rio is running fine I contribute the noise to the more sensitive camera and not the engine.

Josh Vanvolkinburg says:

What did you do to fix the valve noise i got am 03 rio and it sounds the exact same as yours. When mine makes that noise it is usually low on oil but my car doesn’t leak oil or anything at all its not blowing blue smoke my oil is just disappearing idk did you fix yours? If so how?

TheBGravit says:

Replacing the silencer (in the middle of the center pipe) with a piece of straight pipe made the biggest difference in my exhaust note. The Ansa Muffler helped a bit, but it was stock sounding replacement. The car sounds nice, but not too loud and gets noticed. The Bosal exhaust manifold increased the underhood sound. The factory cast iron exhaust manifold flows better than the Bosal (even after my corrections to the exhaust pipes for cylinders 2 and 3), but the Bosal was 1/2 the price.

Hmmm…wonder if I should do this to my 2002 Rio? I’ve got a 5-speed, and I’ve always wanted to give it more of a “growl” at the end. Granted, it’s a 1.5 liter engine, with 95 hp (if that), and I wouldn’t trust it past 105 mph (haven’t gone faster than that). But I need some body work done on mine, a new paint-job, new tires, and a new oil change. I too have also driven in snow, so I’ll have my mechanic check out that coolant pipe. I definitely don’t want it going out on me. Nice job!
