Smittybilt Pivot HD Tire Carrier Jeep JK Heavy Duty Hinge 2843 – Review and How to Install

This video shows the installation and review of a Smittybilt Pivot HD Tire Carrier, (Heavy duty model 2843 hinged), on my 2011 Jeep JK. I purchased this to reinforce the tailgate hinges for mounting a heavier spare tire. Installation is very easy. There was no cutting or drilling. Everything lines up in the original holes. It is definitely heavy duty and seems like it will hold whatever size tire you want to mount. In my case that will be some 34’s.

Great video – straight to the point which is always nice! I just received my Smitty tire carrier and plan on installing this weekend. Other than on the OEM T50 bolts for the hinge plate, did you use blue loctite on the supplied screws for the tailgate as well?

b hoskins says:

is there any problems with rattles with the tire installed while driving ?

Was wondering how this tire carrier is holding up today? Looking at purchasing it. Thanks for the video!

Tow vehicle for your rv? What rv do you have if you don’t mine me asking? I’ve been looking for one that my jeep can tow but they all are past it’s weight limit.

Eli The Explorer says:

His video is still the most useful I’ve found and only half as long regardless if he didn’t mention the gaskets

This is a great video, thanks! I'll be installing one of these soon, it arrives in a few days. Any thoughts on whether I should paint the bare metal under the stock hinges after I remove them?

I have 35" tire on my jeep spare. With original hinges. It does sag a bit when you open it. Does this make a difference? Does is shake when off road? Or do you recommend the ones that have the bumper tire carrier.

Jarrod Moore says:

Arguably one of the best install videos I've seen. Concise with the required level of detail. Have been looking at this carrier replacement for a little while- will probably squeeze the trigger now that I know what to expect on install. Thanks for posting this.

No cb antenna mount point? What about tire bump stops?

mjc_overlander says:

Did you use the 4 spacers and rubber gaskets the came with the mount? I did not use them. Did use the rubber gaskets. Figured it may cut down on any noise. Everything worked great without the spacers. Nice and tight the tailgate ant no rattling or squeaking. Very pleased very HEAVY DUYTY! GREAT VID also.
