my mother has a patriot with 80k and the same problem. im not sure if it
has that type of alternator but the car sounded like a tank rolling down
the street and it took the shop two visits to figure out it was the alt!
the belt was also frayed and needed to be replaced

zx10rpower says:

Good job guinness! I had the same problem with my wife’s patriot. Let me
tell you, these things are just a big of junk as the compass. I HATE the
patriot and all other models that share the same engine/frame. Wish I saw
this vid when I did my alternator. Now I am having problems with the AC
going out and my main problem is the intake manifold runner control stuck
open. Just gonna change out the whole intake manifold and trying to find
some tips. Also had lower control arm bushings done. JUNK car

cvpi06 says:

well I did get around to replacing it on the jeep, autozone had a great
deal with a lifetime warranty I couldnt pass up. Thanks for the vid.

Jon Pfingst says:

glad it helped! nope havnt had to deal with the fuel pump yet, although I
imagine its in the fuel tank like most cars now which could make for a
bigger headache!

thepuck22 says:

yeah it’s in the tank. You have to take out the back seat to get to it.
Another first. This car is full of them.

thepuck22 says:

Thanks man. This video saved my butt. Now…do you have one about replacing
the fuel pump haha. I hate this car. Also chosen by my wife.

guinness765 says:

sorry its been way to long and I have no Idea. A/c compressor bolts were
pretty small. alt bolts were bigger but not sure what size

guinness765 says:

It took me the better part of at least two hours. not knowing what i was
looking for didnt help but although its tight it wasnt that bad of a job
for someone who has some knowledge of working on cars. id say 45 min
straight was trying to figure out how to actually get the thing out after
it was loose. 2nd person cant help too much bc its such a tight
space…GOOD LUCK!!!

timarc124 says:

Thanks a lot !

Giovanni Pena says:

I did this on my friends car and I’m glad to see this was the only way it
could come out, I sat there thinking there’s probably an easier way it
could of came out…lol. cool video

Adumb Green says:

THANK YOU!!!!!

Worschdman says:

Moms alternator is dieing as we speak at less than 5 years and little under
35000 miles. I’ve HATED CHRYSLER for most of my life but now… I don’t
even know the word I can use here… I’m just pissed off. Thanks Chrysler
for being douche-bags and deliberately including design flaws in your so
called Jeeps.

Jason Price says:

You saved my life with this video. Thank you so much. That alternator was a
bitch both in and out

Adamous says:

Thanks. That helped alot

Oscar Alejandro says:

Thanks for the video. BTW the pulley on this ALT is called a Decoupler
Pulley. Here’s what it does: A Decoupler Pulley helps “synchronize” the
belt drive system for improved engine efficiency, reduced
Noise/Vibration/Harshness and increased component life. It features a
sophisticated internal spring and clutch system that absorbs the force
associated with belt accelerations and tension reversals and permits the
alternator to “free-wheel” or “overrun” when the belt suddenly decelerates.

tayofva says:

hey do u happen to remember the sockets needed for the alt n a/c compressor

guinness765 says:

its more of a whining / humming noise mostly occurs on deceleration.
eventually it did start to rattle a little bit and gradually got worse
which is when i finally dealt with it.

guinness765 says:

The caliber and compass share a lot of the same parts, Im pretty sure the
frames are actually identical. So i guess you will also be sharing my
headaches dealing with the front end of this car…good luck with the
alternator!

Larry Weber says:

Thanks for the video. I got the same issue and was wondering why they won’t
recall it??? $900 for this job at Glendale Ca Dodge…. nope. 60,000 miles.
Heard Chrysler is gonna get slammed with recalls on the Jeep.

Jamie Bonifant says:

hi, my husband is getting ready to replace ours also wondering how long the
whole process took for you and if a second person would have been of help
or if its pretty much a one person job?

guinness765 says:

no problem, hope it helps

Stacey Bousquette says:

Guiness765 Thanks for posting the video! Months later I have found it and
will definitely have a better idea of what I am about to do. Lol I’ve got a
Patriot that needs the alt replaced and it’s the same setup as your wife’s
Compass. Guess how I’m gonna spend my weekend? LOL Thanks again!

Carlos Tinocco says:

I just want to say thank you this video saved a lot of money!!

Oscar Alejandro says:

Dude thanks, I’m sure this video will save me a lot of time. I LMFAO when
you said you almost pooped your pants…I know that feeling lol
Question…would it be a good idea to take the front bumper off? Would it
give you more room to get it out?

Worschdman says:

Oh totally forgot to thank you for this video! I got carried away being all
pissed off. SORRY

guinness765 says:

Nah I wouldnt bother removing the bumper, im sure it would help a little
but thers enough room to manage with leaving it there. If you do remove
please let us know if it helps or not!

cvpi06 says:

So did it have a nasty kind of loose rattling noise?

guinness765 says:

my belt looked fine so I didnt replace it. If ther is any doubt about the
belt its def better to replace it during this repair since the belt has to
come off/mostly off anyway. Also did not replace idler pulley since it did
not have any obvious signs of being bad. got my alternator from a local
shop that deals strictly with refurbishing generators. most other parts i
get from various online sites. carpartswholesale (now called “parts train”)
has been pretty good

Kyle Mitchell says:

My 2007 Jeep Compass has 80K miles on it. I am now getting a rattling sound
from the front of the engine on idle and a high pitch whine on
deceleration. I was about to throw idler/tensioner pulleys at it until I
saw this video. Would you recommend changing the idler pulley and the belt
during this repair? Also where do you get your parts?

timarc124 says:

Very nice how-to video ! My Caliber is doing the same thing.
