The noise is typically caused by a misaligned tailgate support which is easily corrected

Just bought a 2017 Jeep Sahara and tailgate was clunking. Watch this video, did what he recommended and the clunking is completely gone. Thank you!
You are a gentleman and a scholar!! I have fussed with this clunking rattle for months. Sil-Glided (check Napa) my seals which did help a little but now it’s got a tight seal and fits great. Test drive ✔️. Noise = Gone.

Thank you, tightened everything in the back including the spare wheel and the number plate, never would I thought to tighten the gate. Will tighten tomorrow, thanks for your help.
