It really wasn’t that bad, just time consuming. I replaced the head with a Clearwater “heavy-duty casting” cylinder head.

“developed a lifter tick”- so you mean every 4.0?
you rule. you give confidence…
Very nice video. Just the facts and no useless garbage…just how it should
be.
whats the purpose of the heater hose around the injectors?
Wow u r the man for doing a great job and saving your self about $3,000 for
some f****** mechanic to mess it up anyway how much was the head how much
was shipping and what was the extra parts you you forgot you had to get the
part store that you said at yhe end of the video
Nice video! Very informative. This is probably the best how to video I’ve
seen in a long time. Thanks!
Great comprehensive how-to video. No BS and he seems to really know what
he’s doing without any stupid arrogance attached.
My 1991 Wrangler YJ just started sounding like this. Probably a bad thing?
My 2001 does the exact same thing. Same noise. Such a big job to fix it.
Good job on the vid. You are a king of shade tree mechanics.
Great Job, own a 2000 XJ as well. Hoping i never have to do this myself!
Once again, Great video and jeep that XJ on the road!
my 2000 WJ head hasn’t cracked yet… knock on wood. i love my jeep and i
hope it never happens :(
are the clearwater cylinder heads good for cherokee
what ever happen to paul?
Great video! I prefer this to reality tv.
Hey bro, only tip I can see since this is technically a pour mans repair.
No pun intended. Lots of cases you can get away without getting intake
machined. Tip for open engine. Wipe cylinder walls with a little oil or
vicks etc to not get rust. You did good as anyone would. Other then those 2
things. Great work and video. I agree on the cam. If you was to go that far
you might as well do the rods as well. Oh its not 4.0 L thats
indestructible. Its the inline 6 engine except the slant 6.
Cool, thanks man. I see the crack in your head was pretty easy to see, I
looked at mine and didn’t see anything.
no, the compression, was good, I checked it. It was just the crack in the
water jacket casting.
Fantastic video man, helped me tons. I’m curious though, when I pulled my
head off I didn’t notice anything wrong with the head gasket. But the shop
said there was detection of hydrocarbons in the exhaust when they tested it
and it was pouring water out the back of the engine block when I would fill
the radiator. I’m curious if you noticed a visible tear or something wrong
with your head gasket?
I think he meant, “Why did you replace the lifters?” I wondered what could
possibly be wrong with them, too.
Good job man. 99 Xj here about to dive into the exact same job with a
salvaged 96 cylinder head.
Hey I have everything apart I notes right of the middle of the head its
just be crack but its like someone before me welding
no, I used a long extension on a ratchet, and reached in from the right side
Question: Did you have to remove the lower intake bolts from under the
vehicle?
I just talked to the guys at Clearwater… I said “I saw this youtube
video” and they said “we can get your jeep head to you in a week”… The
guy said he sells 15 of these a week based totally on your youtube video…
Sounds like a pretty good marketing business! I tip my hat to you, sir.
if your gonna do the lifters, do all of them.
I have the same problem with my oo jeep cherokee I have to do that at
home,grasias por el video viejo,
I gonna start today..but I have question dude.why u have to replace all
lifter?
I’m surprised you didn’t collapse a lifter putting them in not soaked in
oil..
I used a haynes repair manual, and lots of google! and I don’t think you
need to remove the fan, but it will make more room.
Thanks for this video, it actually helped me in fixing my car. I have to
say that you are very brave to take up that big job.
That’s why mechanics charge so much. awesome repair, awesome vid. Nice job!
I’m having the exact same problem with my grand Cherokee 2001, great video
thanks for the info.
good video!
I bought a brand improved new head assembled with all new valves and
springs for this Jeep 4.0 from King Cylinder Heads. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the reply. I changed the thermostat and no joy, Im hitting the
water pump next but plan to do pressure test first to see if that might
rule out the head. Thanks for the advice though, fingers crossed.
they are hydraulic lifters.. just torque them down.
if i were you, I would change the thermostat, and water pump, and put in
new coolant. burp the system really good, and keep an eye on the coolant
level… if it goes down little by little, you’ve got a crack. OR you can
take an oil sample, and send it away to get analized. But pray you didn’t
crack it
Thanks for the video Fearless. Nice work. I’ve got a 2000 XJ that just
overheated and I’m fearing head as well. Still have to get in and have a
closer look. I didn’t know that this was a common problem. The
sticky-clicky lifters aren’t as prevalent on mine and there was really no
warning. Bummer.
Yo. How did you tighten down the rockers. Just as it layed or tdc on each?
good 2 no about the cracked head part! just wanted to redo da top part of
my motor!!
Very nice
Again, thank for the vid! I knocked out the job in 2 short days. Very Easy.
it looked like the head was previously replaced because it looked much
newer. My lifter in intake Cylinder 2 was completely worn through! The old
XJ runs like a beast now!
Very helpful, I have to do the lifters on a 99 Grand Cherokee.
good deal man! gad I could help
dont pass on it if it’s something you really want and can afford.not all of
the cylinder heads on the 4.0L engines are prone to cracking. if you are
buying it from a dealer, ask about what kind of work has been done to it.
the same goes for private sellers.
