Nice video, thanks for sharing. What I found was that the contacts are
oxidized, loose, and/or corroded. ESPECIALLY where the ground contacts the
engine block. I had tried the starter relay swap and new battery. Was
about to fix neutral safety switch, until I realized that it had that
notorious “click”. I even crawled underneath to verify the click was the
started solenoid. I fixed by removing the oil/skid shield and then
removing the wires from the starter AND the ground included in the
harness. I pulled the wires through to the front of the engine and cleaned
them with sand paper, wire brush, and CRC QD terminal cleaner. Then I
cleaned the nuts and bolts with a wire brush. Then I smeared dielectric
grease on the non-contact areas of the connectors. I put the wires back
on, tightened the bolts/nuts really well, and smeared dielectric grease
over anywhere that water might get in. It took me about three hours going
slow and about four beers. DO NOT replace the starter just because your
are “in there”. My other vehicles since 1996 year models (Jeep, Ford, and
Toyota) have made well over 150K miles and never had a starter replacement.

Before this I had gotten the P0710 “transmission temperature code” but had
never gotten the warning light or had any drive-ability problems. No codes
since (after 50 miles). I believe this was erroneous code due to poor
ground connection.

I believe the cause is really one of the amount of torque (tightness) on
the bolt/nuts from the factory and lack of sealant applied. ALL automobile
starter wires are exposed to water while driving. I’ve just never seen any
not be TIGHT after only 90K miles.

The forums are replete with this symptom. My wife’s has been doing
intermittently. The (S)tealerships will tell you to replace starter for
$400 – they are full of manure. I had them replace it mine in ’09 – now
it’s ’14 and doing it again. The yellow starter control wire has a clip on
the end, the wire frays and corrodes causing resistance. When the starter
is replaced it masks the problem by working for a while.
Other possible cause:
-relay – noted in the vid
-ignition switch (not the whole lock cylinder) – fairly easy to do, need
small hands. I think there were small torx bolts.
-corroded + wire from battery
-transmission Park lockout – try putting in neutral and starting.

Cool video, I got starting problems with 2007 crd v6.
Although the engine cranks over some time up to 4 attempts when cold,
however everything fine when engine up to temp.
Thought it may be lazy starter motor, but definitely will be attempting
this fix first.
Best wishes from the UK.

Mine was also the prndl switch on the transmission

Mine was the PCM. Changed the relay the starter and cleaned all the grounds
and even changed the remote wire to the starter

Thanks for the post. I did exactly what you suggested and everything is
running smooth. Im interested to know more about how you knew it wasnt a
battery issue? That would have been my first guess.
