Replacement of the Jaguar XK8 XKR 0r X100 front lower ball joint has long been one of the most challenging tasks for a home mechanic, The majority of owners resort to buying an expensive complete lower control arm as their solution. In this video, we develop a simple technique to achieve the previously VERY challenging task.

Super work-through video with great camera work and commentary. That tool you made is excellent
even though i have an x150 enjoy the work your doing on the x100 keep it up
I am gutted after seeing this video. I have an XJR (308) so basically the same suspension arms etc, .. I needed to do my bottom ball joint for the MOT, I ended up doing it while still on the car and was smashing the living daylights out of it and glowing it up with a mapp gas flame, took me 4 hours and ended up with a tennis elbow for my trouble! I think if the other side goes, I'll take it off and put it on my 20 ton press and do it like you just did John. Great video, thanks for sharing, just wish I had of thought of this instead of the way I did it!
Nicely done, John. I did my suspension in the course of the past two years and replaced everything. She handles so much better now. I ended up cutting the flange on the lower ball joint with a hacksaw and chiseled it away to get more real estate to fit my press tool on. That worked on one side. The other side was stuck beyond belief and I eventually cut open the whole joint, pushed the ball out and drilled holes through the whole thing. Then used the hacksaw again to cut through the cilinder carefully avoiding cutting into the arm. A few hits with a hammer did the rest. Thanks for posting all these vids, it gave me inspiration to undertake the job of upgrading my suspension. The last bit is swapping out the springs now, she rides about 3 cm low and I already replaced the damper mounts. Thanks again and I'm looking forward to a lot more videos…
Excellent work John. I think I went through about 5 or 6 different home made jigs to get mine pressed in. I had all sorts of bits of metal cobbled together. Very satisfying when you finally succeed though.
If you dont have a press Berkshire Jags do exchange arms
Brilliant solution John! I did manage to hammer mine in by freezing the ball joint and then heating the eye like you did in experiment 1. What a great tool you made. You'll have to rent it out!
This video would have been really useful a couple of weeks ago. Had to figure this out myself. I was jealous when you managed to get the ball joints out with a 19 ton press. My 12 tonight press couldn't do it and split the cup. I ended up having leave the joint in an electrolysis bath for 48 hours and using alot of heat to get the joints out.
Great inventiveness to position the press/pull locations. When I changed the Ball joint on my XKR I used an angle grinder to remove the lip on the ball joint to give me more "land" to press against. I only have one of those "G" clamp like ball joint remover tools. A press is on my wish list for sure!
I welded on a part to allow it to be level pressed in and then cut/broke off the welds and job done. May not be to everyone's taste but works well. Looking forward to seeing how you do it.
Nice satisfying work John. Well done.
Great Video John!
