Roof, ceiling liner removal, Jaguar XJ8 – VOTD

Ceiling liner removal: 30 to 45 minutes ($120 / $500 / $1800)

In this video I removed the roof liner from a 1999 Jaguar XJ8. I’m sure this process is similar with other Jaguar vehicles.

$2K to replace a headliner was definitely a person or shop trying to take advantage of someone. I hate those kind of people that assume you're a mark/trick because you own a foreign car vs an American one. I own a 95 Jaguar VDP and had my headliner replaced back in 2001 at a shop. Initially the owner tried to overcharge and tell me about how expensive the Jaguar felt material was, I played along and said "oh yeah", then proceeded to tell him what the cans of spray adhesive and headliner felt material actually costs by the yard from supply shops. Of course he got upset because I called him out on his bullshit and told me to go ahead and do it myself then. I proceeded to tell no, I just want to let you know that I'm not a sucker. So we then looked at material options to match in his shop and he charged me $175.00 to replace. The moral of the story is don't accept what people tell you and call them out on their bullshit.

Thanks Robert. Going to do my headliner tomorrow. Great info here on disassembly. I'm cheating a little bit- I waited until my windshield replacement was scheduled. I think it's going to be a lot easier that way..

Atomic Cafe says:

Hi Robert,

the only way the headliner shell can be removed without damage is to remove the back window and take it out that way. I hope this helps.

Most shops neglect to recover the sunroof panels and overhead console. These pieces also go bad due to the original headliner foam backing disintegrating over time. To do the job right these pieces must also be recovered, also american headlining material will never match correctly…

Gary McMahon says:

I'm sorry but you completely busted the headlining biscuit….

John Wilsdon says:

you didnt show how to glue the lining back on ?.

Thanks for the tips!!!

Paul Rhoads' Littell says:

Hi Robert
I also found your video on the passengers rear door very useful, as on mine you cannot open it from the inside, but you can from the outside, it also seems to catch, so I will adjust the door catch as well, Many thanks, Paul

Paul Rhoads' Littell says:

Hi Robert
Many thanks for all of the useful information that you have supplied, I have a sagging head liner, which has been repaired, my aim is to remove this, and replace the material on my 1995 3.2 manual, jaguar sport,

My recently acquired 2000 XJ8 base is in need of headliner replacement, I got a great quote for 250$ today from a reputable shop that did the audio in my previous LWB.

Ian Lamble says:

Thanks Robert. Just going to replace my headliner, so you've given me an insight on removal. I was told if you push the front seats forward and incline them forward also, then remove the rear bench seat, it will come out through the back door easier. New liner £180 plus shipping from headliner world UK.

Its still going to be a dam site cheaper than buying a new one, im sure a small can of contact adhesive will help the reinstall easyer 🙂
Im sure you will make the destination car look smashing :-))

Michael Sackstein says:

In the words of Scotty Kilmer, since expensive repairs are pretty typical for Jaguars, if you don't wanna spend a lot of money fixing cars don't buy a Jaguar. Lol
