Thanks for the video guys!
Just FYI… I had to repair my fuel sending unit on 2001 Jaguar XJ8, (ODBC code P0460 Fuel Level Sensor Circuit Malfunction), which is located inside the tank, (not mounted on the back side like some versions), suspended from a bracket inside the tank near the fuel pump and was able to access through the top WITHOUT completely removing the tank from the trunk and WITHOUT disconnecting the fuel lines under the car. I was very skeptical it could be done, as I had previously pulled the tank to replace the fuel pump several years ago which was major pain and took several days getting the fuel lines disconnected and re-connected as my arms couldn't fit between the transaxle and the chassis to get to them, had to find a skinny armed friend to finally help me get them disconnected. I can assure you it can be done carefully without disconnecting the bottom fuel lines and no problems with the fuel lines after putting it back. Empty or near empty the tank, undo all the top stuff, and gently but firmly pull the tank forward and to the left and tilt toward you as seen in this video. You will have just enough access to open the top and repair or replace anything like the evap. valve, pump or fuel sender. I had a little over 1/4 tank, and siphoned about 6 gals out after I got the top opened. BTW… my fuel sending unit was repairable! Cheapest replacement I could find was ~$250.00, way over priced for what it is. Anyway, the device is very basic and simply needed cleaning. The contact surfaces had built up a gasoline varnish, I cleaned with steel wool and gently cleaned the sliding contacts with emery board (finger nail file board). The fuel sender is just a plastic unit that easily snaps out of a plastic bracket attached to a metal ring baffle around the fuel pump. It has a plastic assembly with a springy copper slider attached to the float, with contacts sliding on a ladder arrangement of discreet resistance nodes on a small circuit board. The nodes range for 80 OHMS at full, to 900 OHMs at empty. Very simple design, easy fix. Hope this helps, good luck!
