Thanks hightechdad for your video. Along with ifixit guide I was able to
get my wife’s Macbook Pro going again after spilling a mug of tea with one
teaspoon of sugar mixed in on the keyboard. We immediately turned it upside
down and turned it off. We took it to apple store first. they said it was
“drenched” inside and that it would be $1240 to replace everything. And
forget about any data recovery. We are reasoning that they must say this to
the regular customer to justify the $1240 repair. So with nothing to loose
I googled what to do. I disassembled the computer completely. The inside
was not “drenched” just a trickle got through to the mother board and
battery packs. Google research showed that sugar needs to be rinsed with
water. No alcohol necessary. If it had cream in my tea I would have also
followed with a rinse of alcohol. Therefore I took the keyboard and rinsed
with distilled water. I literally took distilled water and poured over the
keyboard clicking buttons to work the water through the keyboard just as
the tea had done. My hope was to dilute and rinse tea and sugar residue
internally. I also used distilled water on motherboard and solid state
hard drive. Here I used a new nylon paintbrush to work distilled water in
on sticky spots. Then I spread out all the parts and let everything dry in
the sun. I also purchased a compressed air can to blow out dust as I
re-assembled. I’m returning the electronic cleaner spray. I put it all back
together and it now is working 30 hours later since the spill! My wife is
now backing up last year’s photos and promising to back up regularly. And
no more tea drinking near the mac. At least keep it a good distance.

Egg carton was a good idea. I will use that in the future for sure.
