The “hard line” after spraying the clear is from not “back taping” the area off when masking. It causes a “soft” more blended edge with the paper being folded away from the working problem area rather than a hard edge, which is harder to sand/wet sand down. For spray can clear 2k (2part) clear is always best.Great video for those who want to fix peeling clear-coat. Thanks for the vid. Much respect to those who tackle and learn by jumping in and doing it themselves.

Honstely.. if you havent done it yet.. lightly wet sand with 2000 grit all over that dull area, then get a high speed buffer, with a foam cutting pad and buff with cutting compound, and another foam pad for polishing and polish compound.. then wax… you will never be able to tell the difference.. and it will shine right up to be non noticable.. just a tip for ya..

Great video. I have an 82 Mercedes that the clear has been buffed through in a few places mainly on the hood. It’s not really peeling like your Jag. I’m going to try to repair it and post a video of it. A couple of things different I plan to do is 1) I am going to spray the whole hood and 2) I plan to use a 2K clear in a can. Did the clear patch do OK until you had it professionally redone or did it fail?

Thank you very much for your reply. 🙂

Hi and thanks for watching. I don’t have an exact list of the materials I used but I believe they were specified in the earlier part of the video. Once I wetsanded the panel I had to deal with the fine scratches that were left behind. My fault was using a liquid compound which was way too weak. When I moved over to something more aggressive like the Mothers compound paste, the find scratches went away and a nice luster was left behind. After 2 years the finish still looks great!

om12353 says:

Hi,
Nice video. Will you please list all the materials that you used? Also, you mentioned something about different compounds during last minutes of video, which one do you recommend? You also said, you did not get good finish after wet sanding, so how did u get over it?
Your response will be helpful to me. Thanks in advance.

shoulda waited for the orbital bro, and a 2k clear in a preval sprayer, or an automotive rattle can clear if you want go cheap. I know your redoing it later but poor jag

Smethjt05 says:

Looks like you just used compound? If so, now try to wax it! Maybe a couple more applications of compound to really polish, but then a solid tough coat of wax! Looking good though!

Next time, lose the squealing brats.

1967vortec says:

came out good . you atta get a little buffer at auto zone for 30 bucks they work pretty good.. butt good job

Benjamin Devendorf says:

hey u should not use wax on new paint….only compound and then polish …. thats why the clear doesn’t look as clear as the rest of the car…..

bank0fengland says:

when you adjust the door, be careful when closing because the window will be much higher. so the window needs adjusting too.

JaysDMC says:

Never noticed the door until you brought it to my attention. Window has since been adjusted though. Thanks for watching!

bank0fengland says:

your door needs adjusting and so does your window

Thanks for posting this! I have a 1999 Mercedes CLK 320 convertible I bought recently which is in great condition except for a couple of small spots where the clear coat is peeling. I plan to have the vehicle painted to a new color next year, but your advice will allow me perhaps a little more piece of mind until then as these spots are an eyesore.

JaysDMC says:

Thanks for the reply. If your clearcoat is peeling off like mine was give this solution a shot. You have nothing to loose. Anyone can do it. I never did this before and it came out great. Just need time and patience.

Yes, I am a Jaguar fan. I am a fan of MANY cars!

Hi thank you, very nice good sir, I have a Jaguar XJS totally different car ,but the same problem. They will not do this ,not even less than paint the whole panel.
