Michael Sackstein says:

many cars these days have it so that you can access the fuel pump from inside the car, without having to drop the gas tank. With Jaguars of this generation it’s probably not that simple, but you might want to check with the manufacturer about that.

Haffschlappe says:

Dont forget the smokeless two stroke oil (1%) in your fuel as anti corrosion additive when using modern ethanolized e5 and e10 fuels in older cars. ( You might ruin your EFI and the fuel pump with the modern ultra dry fuels! — so use 1% two stroke oil as additive!) In Germany the Rolls Royce and Jag Club does so!

Thanks!

Well if i had to do it again i would say it would take me 16 hours. Mechanics will quote you the hours it states in the repair system for the job. Look at alldata for this. That being said, they are going to quote you a hour number based on their labor rate, not the actual time they take to do the job.

man i love all your work,im just after purchasing an xjR with 106000 on the clock,it has a full jaguar service history until 98000 but i still want to get tensioner job done, would a mechanic get the tensioner job done in less than 5 hours or does it take longer??Regards, dan

AlphaDogX25 says:

🙂 alright cool! Thank you sir!

mustangtyson says:

Mine are still working. Although if i did it over again i would use the “Fuel Injection Corp” pumps. They fit perfectly unlike the “airtex” pumps.

AlphaDogX25 says:

I HAVE A QUESTION did the new Airtex fuel pump go out on you? if so, i need to get away from buying that. my 1994 jaguar xj6 fuel pump needs to be replace 🙁

i am doing a 2001 xj8 fuel pump right at this moment for a friend and enjoyed seeing some foresight from this vid before i did it. I have one question. How in the $@#* did you get your arms over the diff to get to the quick connects?! Between the shafts, the diff, control arm, exhaust, brake cable its nearly impossible, ended up dropping 3 subframe bolts to tilt it down, got one line with some blood, now working on a stubborn second one. 30 minutes to undo the rest of the stuff. Wow these stink!

Jussi Koukku says:

Great vid! I see it’s a metal tank… I wonder how it would work with E85, i.e. would the ethanol (or water in it) corrode the tank?

silentsuspekt says:

Need help with a 02 jaguar x-type fuel pump replacement. Looks tough

mustangtyson says:

I would say they are reliable. But i have had some problems:
tentioners (elective job)
Battery cable bad connection (battery is in the trunk)
Fuel Pumps died
headliner is falling down

Cost of running one is higher than a Toyota Camery for instance. Tires, parts are more expensive. To put it in perspective they cost around $80K new in 98.

It has been the best performing, most luxurious car i have ever had. I would not hesitate to get one.

friendlyuser1 says:

hi, you know your car well… iam considering a 1998 xjr with 130,000 miles on it but dont know anyone who owns one, hows ur ownership experience witht he car ? are they reliable or do i need a fortune to keep them running ? thanks.

askthemechanic says:

Nice job … would be really nice to see how to release the fuel lines under the car and how the tank comes out,

Balo Mega says:

very good video, just like a teacher would do

mustangtyson says:

I didn’t make that clear enough. Sorry. I want to use a floor jack. I have figured out how to use the factory jack.

fearyized says:

Tyson. That point you see as the hard point for jacking is the factory jack point. The rubber stopper comes out and the factory jack goes right in.

fearyized says:

I just had both of my headgaskets done at my Jag Dealership. You can see pics of my XJR on Jaguarforums, ym37tech. I had every single coolant hose replaced on mine. I would suggest you do the same. The will continue to fail on you and cause overheating. Also, when you have the gaskets changed make sure you have the third gen chain tensioners.

Nice talking with ya Tyson on the rptr, see ya around..

jas sahota says:

Throttle bodies respond very well to being cleaned. You can get this in aerosol form

smegace says:

Accessing those fuel lines sucks… the tank would just slide right out if it werent for them.

SSBBFREAKg1 says:

I did not find what I was looking for in this video.

Anth Murphy says:

Thanks for this.. your jag videos are great.. I also have a 98 XJR.. I’m a bit of s novice but I’m wanting to learn as much as I can about my car and I’ve learned quite a bit from your videos already.. keep it up.. unfortunately it seems my XJR may have blown a gasket!. it’s getting checked out tomorrow. fingers crossed it’s just something simple! 🙂

nodealertouchesmyJag says:

I noticed that the 2 rubber fuel hoses are going directly from the pump to the outlet of the tank. I guess Jaguar learned the lesson from the infamous donut seal which is not available. They kept your system very simple which is good. Where do you have a check valve? I guess you have an inline. I installed an inline check valve years ago so it’s not a problem if that hose skips the original check valve that’s located on the top of the fuel canister. This valve can cause starting problems too.

nodealertouchesmyJag says:

Nice and informative video. I have a ’94 XJ40 and I also replaced the fuel pump a few weeks ago. Mine sits in a round plastic canister ($600 new). There’s a blue donut seal at the outlet of the pump that failed and didn’t seal correctly causing low fuel pressure in the lines. I simply drilled a hole on the top of the canister above the pump and bought a hose that resists fuel and connects to the pump’s outlet directly and runs to the outlet of the tank skipping the check valve.

mustangtyson says:

I don’t know if the throttle body’s are the same between blown and NA cars. But i never had the recall done on my car because i never had a problem. Sorry i cant help you. But the best place i have found for help is jaguarforums

sashimimann says:

Thank you for uploading. I have a naturally aspirated XJ8 (2000). I had to replace the fuel pump in 2008. Do you have any problems with the throttle body? I had to replace it back in 2005 under the warranty. But now, I have my engine stalled frequently. If you have some thoughts/comments, I would appreciate for it.

Happy motoring!
