Just to provide some feedback here… my calipers are $400 (each, not for
the pair) to replace on my wrx, and $200 if i get rebuilt ones. the
seals/o-ring kit only cost $25 (for the pair) at a local dealer if you free
up the caliper piston yourself. this video is worth a lot in my opinion.
Thanks DrJerryrigger
To get the piston out, if you have access to compressed air, put a piece
SOLID wood between the caliper “jaws” and the piston then put compressed
air, piston will come out easily but itself and hit the wood to stop, if
you don’t use wood your piston is gonna fly somewhere and get damaged !
The problem will come back when rebuilding a brake caliper.I have seen some
brake caliper pistons used as a brake pad ruined in the process because
people ignored a grinding noise called metal to metal.Rebuilding the brake
caliper was not an option for this.
Yup, going through that right now stuck caliper was ” fixed with some new
parts” 2 months ago. Notice brake smell and burning yesterday. If you can
afford to replace it do so it’s just a hassle now…now my rotor is going
to need resurfacing. If it has wheels it will cause problems.
@DrJerryrigger Yes i wasnt saying your method is wrong i was just giving
another options for people with compressed air and no grease gun, i agree
with all your other methods also, nothing is wrong with that ! Have a good
day sir and keep up the good video work 🙂
If the rebuild is done properly it’s fine, if not, you’ll of course have
problems. I rebuild all my calipers without fail – only because where i’m
living new calipers are outrageously expensive, in the order of $400 US.
Looks cold mate and best to just replace the entire calpier or in you case
do to lack of maintenance replace the rotors, hubs and pads to. Thats funny
when you said not leaking YET.
@DrJerryrigger I would not put a new seal against the old piston.I have
seen calipers $20.00 a piece.I am a mechanic for 10 years now and know
getting a reman is the easier way, saves on labor. All you have to do is
install reusing the old sealing washers over for a reason and bleed the
brakes.Reuse the sealing washers since the new washers don’t seal very well
and leak.
Thanks for this. My boat trailer caliper(s) need some help and I am loathe
to pay hundreds-per-caliper for trailer brakes. I expect I’ll find
corrosion and other problems so I appreciate your video that deals with
some fairly rough looking calipers. I did notice others use compressed air
to remove piston so maybe I’ll try that.
Time consuming too rebuilding a brake caliper. With the reman, all you do is
install it reusing the copper washers and bleed the brakes. You are done.the
new copper washers are worthless, all they do is leak.
@skylineconcrete Couldn’t agree more. And I saved about $70 by rebuilding
this, and frankly I don’t like remans, I’d rather rebuild them myself. I’m
sure I’d buy them if they were $20 for my car, or if someone else was
paying for them.
No new seals and boot? They’re DIRT cheap better than risking it.
did you grease it? why not show that? what car is it for?
I find his stache easy to fap to.
true and you have to buy two.
thats sooo hot.

It’s an O ring man ! Good luck with it !
Better off buying a reman, much easier to do and save yourself time.
“fortunately i didnt die” LMFAO 😉
Did the brakes perform well even thou the cylinder had a bit of “pitting”
from the previous rust?

agreed. my caliper is 200$..not everyone has a geo metro

@farstarfilm dude, they are $70.
It was stuck good then ! Glad you got it out 😀

Better to buy used caliper, once a caliper is seized its prone to seize
again

what people need to realize is not every car is cheap to replace. or what
if its an old car and you cant get them?
thanks man
Your comment makes sense, but some of us can barely get by anymore.
Plus you get a warranty with a reman caliper
