Here’s a tip I thought I’d share Mr. Kilmer, and to those watching this
video. While working on my 2006 Ford Taurus the other day I took all of
the lug nuts off and the wheel had seezed in place so I couldn’t get it
off. I tried kicking opposing sides, wiggling it, lowering the car down on
it with no lug nuts on then lifting it back up and nothing worked. I even
wiggled it hard enough with my hands that I started actuating the steering
box and steering the other front wheel (without the engine running), and
still no dice. The way I got it loose was to set the emergency brake, then
lower that wheel onto the ground with no lug nuts in place and with some
slight pressure on the body of the car with the jack so if something
slipped the jack would catch the car. I got into the car and started it,
put it in Drive (emergency brake still set), and gave it just a little bit
of gas. I heard a pop, went around and raised the car back up and the
wheel had popped loose.

After that incident I have started painting the back side of the wheel and
the end of the axle that the wheel sits around to help prevent it from
corroding/rusting in place, just like I grease the lug bolts/studs to keep
the nuts from corroding in place. I figure it’s my wife’s car, and if
something happens and she has to change a tire on the side of the road
without me, it wouldn’t do her any good if she can’t get the lug nuts off
or if the wheel is so corroded it won’t come off even with the lug nuts
removed.

steal some nice wheels Thanks!

Peter Kapica says:

Hey Scotty, one time I broke a wheel stud to remove a stuck lug nut. Never
replaced it.

westbcoast says:

The pole trick worked nicely for me (thank you), I actually took the pole
right off my hydraulic jack, so I am pleased I have two uses for the jack
🙂 My question is, do I really need a impact wrench or can I just tighten
by hand to the point where I am unable to turn it anymore ? I also assume I
should not use the pole to tighten it, as I don’t want to damage it by over
tightening it.

DysfunctionalBubble says:

The last time i stood on a lug wrench, my lug snapped off and cost me 200
dollars. I won’t risk it again.

javier portillo says:

Thanks scotty, I just got my tires replaced and I was just about to paint
my rims when I could not get them off

Great video Scott….. Yet in this case your solution seems to have caused
new problems. (for me anyway) Have stuck lug nuts on one wheel of my
Montana van. (19mm) Went out and found one of those “wheel lock remover
tools”…. (used the 13/16th size…. AZ rep seemed to think that would be
fine….) Yet it turned the nut off But two problems…. the nut is now
stuck inside the remover tool! Even worse, the bolt/stud broke off and its
inside the nut. So first, how does one get the nut out of the tool? And
do the boIts usually break off so easily? (I already was planning to
replace the wheel hub assembly, but wow…. this is “nuts”)

Juan Merlos says:

The extension pipe worked like a charm. Exactly what I needed.

Patrick Duke says:

I found your channel today because I had to flat and I could not get the
lug nuts off. Your tip about using your leg muscles instead of arms was
perfect for to get that darn stubborn super tight lug nut loosened. Thanks
Scotty. I joined your channel today also. Patrick

matter how much I tried it went in half way and then came loose. other 3

Thanks Scotty. The leg trick seems like common sense, but didn’t occur to

Thanks! Very helpful.

Jorge Mateos says:

Thank you very much. I am paraplegic and wheelchair bound and trying to
remove the lug nuts with the factory provided tire wrench was impossible by
myself. Thankfully I watched your video and your most excellent advise of
using a pipe came in very handy! I was able to loosen the nuts and change
my tire! TYVM!

jd tsab says:

hey scotty do you have any idea to turn off the Navigation on the 2006
honda pilot when driving on the highway can’t find any switch but to turn
off the engine of the car

gymbeaux5354yt says:

Great videos Scotty. Like a few others on here, I’ve had trouble with a
tire shop warping my rotors by torquing down my lug nuts too tight! Is
there anything that can be done to prevent that? (Other than not using an
impact wrench set too high.) I saw one guy say to re-torque the nuts when
you get home. Does that actually help? I figured the damage would already
be done by then.

Bogie Borchardt says:

Can’t get those stinkers to budge even by jumping on it…. :'(
If only there was a pipe around. Too bad we got a flat way out in BFE.
Hopefully help comes soon and they have a pipe already.
