If the car cranks then you don’t have any problems with the neutral safety switch. I would check the spark plugs and ignition coils. I have a video showing how to replace spark plugs and I identify the ignition coils as well.

brentgreen8 says:

It will start …..could it be the alarm

CarsNToys says:

Sorry, Brent. I’m not following. What happens after the car sits for 20 minutes?

brentgreen8 says:

I have a 1998 i30 just changed starter an alternator…. but still have starting issues….if sits for 20 min it will crank but want start back to back is it the ignition switch

CarsNToys says:

No problem, Geoff. I’ve uploaded the diagram to my pinterest account. Click on the schematics folder.

Geoff Hernandez says:

Cool thanks…man…that will be helpfull…

CarsNToys says:

Well, it comes down to either spark or fuel. If spark plugs are good next thing to check are the coil packs. You can do an ohm reading with a multi meter. It’s a simple test. I can upload a diagram to my pinterest page if you want to tackle the job.

Geoff Hernandez says:

The car crank…a couple times…once start runs nice…thats why i dont think the spark plugs could be the problem..they r new…the car runs just fine…its only whe i try to start it…sometimes it will start right on…and other after a couple of cranks…cold or hot…its the same.

CarsNToys says:

You won’t have this exact part because you have a manual transmission. Manual transmissions use a back up lamp switch. I’ll post a picture to my pinterest page (under schematics) showing what the part looks like and where it’s located on your vehicle. However, if you’re able to crank the vehicle this will not be your problem. How are the spark plugs? I have a spark plug replacement video if you need help removing and checking the plugs.

Geoff Hernandez says:

Same engine…same v6…all looks just like mine…but that thick wire that u touch that goes to the switch i dont have it….how is that possible…let me know what u think…thnks.

Geoff Hernandez says:

Nissan maxima 95 manual transmition…its the same as this one…man i have watched this video 100 times…and mine does not have this part…im telling u…thats weird…my problem is the car runs fine smooth just fine…but as soon as i turn it off its hard to start…some times will turn right on…others just crank for..then start just fine…so i thought this was the problem but…the neutral switch…but man…i can find the damn thing..its just this car..same motor..

CarsNToys says:

What kind of car?

Geoff Hernandez says:

Is the same location for manual transmition…

MIGUE13178 says:

thank you very much friend

CarsNToys says:

Hey Migue. It’s on the driver’s side of the vehicle. There’s a compartment to the left of the steering wheel. I’ll post a picture on my facebook account. Take a look. Cheers.

MIGUE13178 says:

if you could help me. where is the air conditioning relay of Nissan Altima 2007. thanks

Mimi Paige says:

Where are you from by the way-?

Mimi Paige says:

Yes, we replaced the switch twice and drove it after -it would take a few rides and the check engine light would come back on. You’re right I should check if that code pops up currently. Hopefully I can next week -Thanks for reading:)….

CarsNToys says:

Good tip. That will also work. Cheers.

MrOhnospam says:

Bah! Sounds a bit too hard pulling out all the bits.

Alternate: Get a hoist or two car ramps and run the car up on them on a safe flat hard surface, put the handbrake on firmly and chock the back wheels, get a ratchet socket and remove the six 10mm bolts holding the left hand engine protection plastic cover under the engine.

You now have lots of room to work from underneath without grazing your carefully gloved, manicured hands!

Bonus: No disconnected battery or clock or radio reset required.

CarsNToys says:

Hi Chester. Do you mean the two rubber stoppers on the back of the brake pedal? Take a look at my facebook page. I’ll post an image.

Chester Hamilton says:

tks for your vids very helpful. my son has a 95 sentra manual trans. the clutch pedal has a rubber or plastic grommet? that has disintegrated broke whatever, which depresses the safety switch when the pedal is pushed to the floor to start the car. what is that called and I have rigged it with a rubber tube, but cannot find anyone that has a clue what I am talking about and the nearest dealer is an hour away. the break light switch grommet also missing and appears to be the same piece ..

CarsNToys says:

Thanks man. Not the neutral safety switch. It has no control over the ignition key assembly. Sounds like the ignition assembly needs replacement.

hfilomeno2004 says:

hi, great video dude, question ? I have a 2002 Nissan maxima and the key won come out , bot the car starts ok, but the only thing the key wont turn all the way off so I can take the key out , question / could it be the safety switch?

CarsNToys says:

Hi Fermin. These problems are not associated with a faulty neutral safety switch. You most likely have a problem with the shift lock solenoid. You can test the shift lock solenoid using a power source and a multi-meter. I can add diagrams to my facebook account if you want to tackle the problem yourself.

fermin cornejo says:

hi i have a 2004 nissan pathfinder armada . my shift is lock, the reverse lights dont work, also the brake light dont work either… do you think is the neutral safety switch….? thanks

CarsNToys says:

Hi Crzyn..The answer to your question is no. The vehicle won’t crank at all if the neutral safety switch is faulty. The best thing to do is get a scan tool and see what code(s) are coming up. Take a look at my ‘Nissan Maxima Check Engine Light Fix’ video for help. Let me know if you have any questions regarding what code(s) come up. Cheers.

Crzynickratkllr says:

Hi. Good video. I was wondering, my kid’s 1995 Nissan died at the local 7/11. Actually, he drove it there but when he came out, it wouldn’t start. He has had an engine check light on for sometime now also. It seemed to be having long cranking issues leading up to this current problem. I was wondering, does the faulty neutral safety switch allow it to crank at all? Or does the key just turn with no response?

CarsNToys says:

Hi Mimi. A couple of questions: Was the trouble code erased after the sensor was replaced? If not, was the vehicle driven after the sensor was replaced? I ask because if the sensor was replaced but the vehicle was not driven due to not having current registration, then the ecm (computer) did not have a chance to cycle. Also, maybe you have different trouble code. Have you checked and verified you currently have code p0705?

Mimi Paige says:

HELP
I have the error code P0705 with my 2000 Infinity G20

I had the park/neutral switch replaced but the Check Engine light is still on (has been for a while now, runs fine but haven’t been able to drive it for half a year for registration purposes). Is it a sensor?

I have no money to try and find out what the problem is anymore, and no one wants to help. I was hoping you can. Thank you for reading:)

CarsNToys says:

Images are posted. Hope it helps. Cheers.

Patience Perez says:

yes, thank you very much :).

CarsNToys says:

Yes, if your Altima has an automatic transmission, it’s very similar. (You can also access the sensor from underneath the car.) I can add some diagrams on my facebook page if that helps. Cheers.

Patience Perez says:

2001

CarsNToys says:

What year?

Patience Perez says:

what about a nissan altima ? 🙁 it kind of looks the same.

CarsNToys says:

It sure could.

doug benjamin says:

One day this week, when it was really hot, my 1994 Nissan truck would not start in park (after it had been driven for over an hour). It would start in neutral. Does heat have an effect on the neutral safety switch? When it was cool it was fine.

CarsNToys says:

Thanks, Restore. I appreciate it.

RestoreITdontJunkIT says:

good job, sir.

CarsNToys says:

Hey Kay. Wearing gloves isn’t for every one. I wear them to keep the oil & grease off my skin and from getting under my nails. But if you prefer not to wear them that’s cool. It’s really a personal preference. Cheers.

Kay CEO says:

I forgot to add that usually the case where you see someone working on a car with gloves, your dealing with someone that does not do mechanic work often lol…i am still laughing so hard i have tears running down my face lol…

Kay CEO says:

One thing just kills me (and you have a good video) is i grew up with my three brothers and dad working on cars and they all raced cars “modified” at the track. Seeing someone wherein gloves to work on a car is so gay, its just not right…sorry 🙂

Timmy Lin says:

what year was this nissan?
