I had a quote and a “diagnosis” from a shifty mechanic for a new power
steering pump … they wanted to slug me $2000 au, I was curious as to what
you guys charge for such a service(2003 wrx impreza MY03) as 1. this sounds
like complete bs to me , and 2. it was late in the day and they obviously
ran absolutely zero diagnosis…. there are no obvious leaks around the
system. and the fluid was a little low (getting it flushed and refilled by
another mechanic this week) any help and or advice would be greatly
appreciated.

Mike Guidroz says:

Seems to me its a pressure problem, but its a new pump. A stopped up line ?
Im baffled and confused. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated

David James says:

Help? 93 K1500 Suburban. Steering became very difficult at idle.
Suspected a weak pump. I have since replaced the pump twice, the steering
gear box, and both pressure and return lines with new O-rings. I bled the
system well with motor off and wheels off the ground. With the motor on I
cycled the steering about 20 times, maintained fluid level and the steering
worked great and the fluid was clear. BUT- with the wheels back on the
ground the pump is working hard, the pressure hose is flexing and tiny
bubbles appear in the fluid. Where to from here? Thanks

Weslee Yarolem says:

Weird noise coming from my car, power steering cuts in and out as i drive
and it whines when i turn. Should i just replace the p/s pump? Or could it
be something else?

gaarayama8 says:

hey guys, my steering is stiff especailly when stationary, turning left and
right during parking etc, and the power steering doesnt roll back by itself
when i steer. my mechanic said my power steering pump has gone weak as my
power steering fluid was low and i was driving. shall i ask him for new
power steering pump? its quite expensive or jus leave it? thanks

Q Hinton says:

Hey could u help me I have a power steering leak I put fluid in and it last
only for a day could u give me a good way to start diagnostic

Kien Anh Huynh says:

Should the pressure be ZERO when he just cranked the car ? Cause the fluid
just flow freely in the steering sys cause no steering effort was being
applied ?

I am working on a 65 2+2 289 auto trans. The owner had another tech install
power steering on the car (it did not have PS originally). Everything
appears to be new and correct as far as I can tell. However, the car steers
like a car without PS. Fluid is full–belt is tight–valve is centered (it
does not pull left or right) and all hoses are new and are hooked up
correctly.

I hooked up a PS test gauge with shut off valve.

At idle and test valve open the reading was 300psi

At idle with the test valve closed the reading was 1050psi and the pump was
starting to make noise

At idle while turning the steering wheel back and forward about one half
turn the reading was still 300psi

I checked the piston by disconnecting the hoses and draining the
fluid–then I pushed the piston rod in and out while holding my finger over
one of the holes for the hoses and I could feel suction and pressure. I
also gave the piston a shot of compressed air and the the rod moved out and
I did not see any air coming from the other hose hole.

I also removed the control valve and disassembled it–it looked fine
inside. All the parts were installed correctly and everything moved as it
should.

Still NO ASSIST—the only thing that I don’t know is what is a normal PSI
reading for this pump. Is 300psi at idle a normal psi reading??? Or do I
need to replace the new pump.

great video, very professional. loved the cut away of the pump and the
further explanation of how it works

Chris Gal says:

I appreciate the instructional video but the camera work was making me
dizzy! Would you concider mounting the camera on a tripod or getting a
camera operator a stool so he doesn’t sway so much??

Mike Guidroz says:

I have a “98” dodge ram 1500 , 2 wheel drive. The pump went out , leaked
real bad. The truck has over 200,000 miles, all steering compones are stock
originals. After changing the pump , satartupme day , it blew a seal in the
steerigp box. I pulled the box and purchased a seal kit. Pulled it apart
popped in new seals , reassembled, and re mounted. Now upon startup the
wheel turns to the left, on its own. Every time. It turns both ways witth
slight resistance, but always pulls left wn iu

Paul Govensky says:

Removing the pulley is not the problem. I wish you would show installing it
back on the pump. My kits refuses to keep the center bolt in tack inside
the pump shaft and all I am doing is turning the bolt loose as I am turning
the installer. It should not take over an hour to make this thing move.

Jason Busby says:

My 1994 ford f250 5 speed is having a problem, I can get in start it up,
and I have power steering for about a half turn of the wheel in either
direction, however, after that, it’s incredibly difficult to turn, upon
inspection, the reservoir was full and fluid appeared clean, and there were
not visible leaks, I doubt that the linkage is binding. And when starting
there is indeed a wine. I question whether or not it’s a combination of
impending pump failure as well as a failure in the steering gearbox?

sivaraj palanisamy says:

if my pump pressure is good, and if pump is still making noise, can i
assumem pump is bad.. not sure what in pump is making that growning noise..
please advise, you are an expert, so i need what is happening behind the
secnes.

Jon Ramsden says:

Have you guys considered a “how to” video for re-valving a power steering
pump for more road feel? This video was most informative and interesting.
Thank you!

sivaraj palanisamy says:

hi, i have hond accord 97 model. power steering pump is growling, noisy..
when i opened the fluid, i see it lot of air, i tried to remove air, by
dead end to dead end . i also tried to use mityvac with adapter.. still
foam and air is there..

Question is I assume there is leak somewhere.. is that right?
2) when power steering pump is nosiry what internal part of pump is worn..
can u please advise. this question is more of theory not about fixing it..
not sure what part in pump is causing is growling sound..

Luis Martinez says:

I do have a ford focus 2001 zx3, and every time I turn the steering wheel
to the left or right, then the steering wheel makes a growling sounds, like
if you were driving a boat….Does thism mean a PS pump?

Marlen Sands says:

03 hyundai santa fe at idel (about 800 rpm) hard to turn the wheel but if
I put it in neturel and rev it up you can turn the wheel ok. plenty of
fluid in the system. is it in the pump or the rack

Brian Chinn says:

Want really all that tough…. I don’t believe in mechanics… They cost
too much… So I took it a part my self…. It was a broken shaft……

Aidon Kurjata says:

i put a brand new pump on a week ago and it doesn’t steer at all anymore

roon demahom says:

Excellent presentation. Explanation very short, sharp & straight to the
point. Easy to understood theory & practical. I liked your way of tutorial,
slow & calm. Double thumbs up to you for your very useful info & tips. You
are Professor Genius Sir David Einstein of modern mechanical engineers. :-)

Jay Noonkester says:

05 Gmc sierra steering seems fine and all of a sudden it quits momentarily,
most of time when turning from dead stop. Changed pump, flushed system
twice, front end checked by 3 different mechanics. found no problems, don’t
know what to do.

Brian Chinn says:

Hey how you guys doing?????? I was on the way home and my power steering
just quit…. The pimp made no noises at all…. But I now have no power
steering……. I checked fire leeks and there are none….. Any
suggestions on what just happened to my power steering????

sivaraj palanisamy says:

hi, i have my friend who have 1997 honda accord, power steering pump was
removed because to fix something else nothing wrong with pump, now the
power steering pump is making sound while making a sharp turn.. can u
please advise, we can see some bubble in power steering fluid, can a bubble
cause sound, can a wrong fluid cause sound, is there any other reason can
cause sound in power steering please advise.. i am asking this to get all
reason for this sound, not for this case alone.

Thanks, @sivucit, we appreciate the kind words.

bbbindustries . says:

The reason the pressure goes up when you close the choke? The pump sees a
demand, but you have no usage. Same principle when you hit against the
steering stop. The common name for it is DEAD HEADING. Easiest explanation
is when you put your finger over a hose back pressure increases, half over
,or open. When the rack/gear is using the force to turn, the pump works to
keep it turning using the pressure. Engine speed has some effect on pump
pressure, but max efficiency is not much higher than idle.

truthseeker0219 says:

ps- does the return line have to jam up to the metal on the inside?

bbbindustries . says:

Air bubbles cause the pump to have cavitation which is most likely the
noise they are hearing. Honda power steering fluid is specially designed
and regular PS fluid should not be used. Check the video description to
download a PDF that will show you how to bleed the steering system..
