Discussing 2001 Hyundai Elantra issues with Uncle Phil

This ’01 Elantra used to be my car up until 2 years ago. 50K miles later it’s developed severe performance issues. This is a textbook example of “throwing pa…

francisco andrade says:

check the injectors I have the same problem with my car and I took the
injectors off and clean all 4 and now the car is good

Frederick Brasher says:

as many miles this thing got on it it also probably needs a valve
adjustment .

Mark Bartlett says:

Awwww bless him. My Hyundai Getz had 86k (UK Miles) on the clock when I
bought it. Before going to take the car for a test drive, I done a bit of
research and it seems a common problem on my engine at least, it likes to
get new plugs….lol. Anyway, i took it on a test-drive and would you have
it…. a missfire. I used that to prise the price down a bit and got it
home. On the service history, the plugs had been changed about 15k miles
previous. Despite just 15k miles since the plugs were changed, the missfire
got worse and worse. Whipped out the old plugs, new ones in and it was
perfect.

Now, I’ve got 102K miles on the clock and the misfire is creeping back
again. I’m hoping it’s just the plugs this time, but might clean up the MAF
sensor.

Frederick Brasher says:

sounds like intake gasket blown.

Evan Trioli says:

u check front motor mount? put in gear and see if its broke

Milano Star says:

I just bought a 2001 Hyundai Elantra with 149,000 miles on it less than 4
weeks ago from an auction in Michigan. And unfortunately its giving me
problems already. Yesterday morning i tried to start my car and it
wouldn’t. An AAA guy came out tested my battery said it was bad. so i get a
new battery, it starts again, and i able to drive. Then the next day i
drove it wen i turn it makes a squeasy noise, then after a couple of
hours while the gear was in drive it CUTS OFF, assume my battery went
dead. I got a battery boost, drive it to auto zone had them test the
alternator, they say its ok. I drove it home less than 15min later battery
and brake light come on, so i cut the car off thinking it was just a
error and tried starting it and it won’t start. i don’t know what to do.
Could it be my alternator belt loose; bolts, or need a starter, terminal
connection plugs to the battery are to worn, or need a second test done on
the alternator? I’m so disgused, i need my car running! Please help!

John Bolles says:

I currently own a 2002 Hyundai GLS (low mileage). It’s a beast in the snow,
as I just came from snowy Philadelphia and survived. Anyway, I think you
have or had a blown head gasket…among things.

zmazu says:

red necks lol

Cactus Bob says:

Nosy fuel pump ? Could be low fuel rail pressure , or a bad fuel filter.
Check fuel rail pressure If you don’t have a tool for that an old set of
refrigeration gauges work great

WhoSaidTyler says:

The plugs helped out quite a bit but there is still some rough running here
in there so fuel pressure will be checked as soon as I find my gauge. He
left out a critical piece of info until days later and that was that the
temp and heater have been acting funny along with the running bad issue.
That is very NOT good.

MrGostsparten says:

Check the spark plugs , I put some new ones in mine, n its never run the
same

moparmania74 says:

could be a plug, or maybe a sticky injector… i would try new plugs and
some good injector cleaner.. like lucas. also you should tell phil to just
grab a spark plug socket… instead of messing around with hoses and
such… right tool, for the right job. but also it seems to me i kinda hear
some noise in the engine. does that engine have a timing chain? cause thats
almost what it sounds like to me. is the timing chain is stretching out.
and that would make it run just like that.

WhoSaidTyler says:

Great cars.

Idayat Obisesan says:

The worst car ever made. I have a Hyundsi Elantra and I hate everything
about it… I hope they go out of business because they can’t be making sub
standard cheap cars..

clubcar98 says:

Sounds like a lawnmower!!! I hate changing plugs on aluminum heads, always
makes me sweat. One of the plug holes on my VW has messed up threads
midway. Definitely makes me nervous ever time I change that one, still
tightens down though for now…

WhoSaidTyler says:

It’s actually Uncle Phil’s car and he bought all those parts before telling
me something was wrong with it. The “acting funny” means the temp needle
drifts up and down and the heater cools down and warms up in unison.
Normally I wouldn’t be that concerned except that 1. it started that
exactly when it began running bad and 2. that car always ran perfectly and
had no cooling issues, ever. I think it possibly has a head gasket going
but I’m not telling him that…yet.

Ben's Collection and Sundry says:

I wonder if that is Uncle Phil’s pink bike? Uncle Phil is obviously wants a
honda! You get something that runs like a lawn mower when you pay for lawn
mower priced plugs. haha

Mark Bartlett says:

Hundy haters… lol. I’m running a Hundy Getz.

travlincub321 says:

I am glad to see it still going.. Hyundai’s are such good cars

Derangedteddy says:

Those sure are some noisy lifters… Check the oil in that thing because
mine does not idle that loudly even when the oil is a quart low. I’m not
saying that it’s your idle problem, but it’s something I’d check.

Cactus Bob says:

“funny ” ? as in telling jokes ? or as in blowing cold when heat is
selected ? as in system becoming air bound ,or in this case “compression
Gas bound” , is this what your thinking ? the motor is noisy , sounds like
cam followers , or a bad case of overheating might be time to cut your
losses and replace the car there is no point to this car in the junkyard
with a bunch of new parts on it in six months quit while your ahead

moparmania74 says:

especially how it doesnt miss or jerk when you rev it slow. but when you
snap the throttle quick it does it… that is a timing chain indicator as
well.

WhoSaidTyler says:

No timing chain on these engines.

WhoSaidTyler says:

I’ll double-check with him but he’s pretty good about keeping oil checked.
Thanks man…
