Thanks man!

Drey Platt says:

Dude you are a rockstar thank you for this video!

WhoSaidTyler says:

I liked the Elantra as well or a little better than the Proteges, because it had a better ride and quite a bit more power. A person wouldn’t go wrong with either one IMHO.

WhoSaidTyler says:

Good job. Don’t feel bad, I usually have to re-tension the manual tensioners myself.

iplaydrumsandstuff says:

i have a 2003 hyundai elantra and replacer a timming belt and idle pully and tension pully the whole job taken me six and ahalf hours.very big job.i had to retension the the belt i made it to tight it was a easy fix thank you

Alexandre Potvin says:

So Tyler, you’ve owned two Protégés and one Elantra so far. What do you have to say about both cars, comparatively speaking? Nevermind that your Protos were a generation behind the ones I’m looking at.

Just wondering, I’ve been a backseat passenger in both, I reckon the Elantra was the most comfort-oriented but that the interior wasn’t too “hot” compared to the last generation Protégé. They seem to fare similarily reliability-wise.

Thanks.

twiztedbacon says:

arethey the same engines in a 2001 tibuton right

Mainbwana says:

Question. I also have a 2001 Hyundai Elantra 5 speed manual transmission. I am doing this myself and am stuck on part 13:22 of the video. I cannot seem to get that pulley off. I did get the bolt off, but the pulley is not budging. What do you suggest in removing it?

Kevin Hucker says:

Thanks for the video! I was feeling a little trepidation about changing this timing belt because of the engine mount. Turns out it’s just like every other timing belt I’ve changed. Huzzah!

WhoSaidTyler says:

Simply take another of whatever tool you are using to loosen the bolts and set it to tighten. Place it on another bolt, and while you are loosening one bolt, the other tool is tightening the other bolt. That works good on 3, the last one may take some effort!

Thomas Chapman says:

Tyler….You covered it quickly but I am haing a problem getting the four bolts off to remove the centre or main pully (not sure what the name of the pully is..)….It a real problem trying to get it not to turn at the same time I am trying to loosen the four bolts…..Whats the trick….

WhoSaidTyler says:

These are bad to wear the alternator belt so I would check that one first.

cruzan187 says:

hey T first off big thx for the info…im definately addin dis vid to my fav list…i have a 2003 elantra gls(not sure if dat makes n e difference) and the problem im havin is when i start the car in the morning (or first time of the day) right away i hear squeakin noise. now i do kno that its a belt that needs replaceing, but i hear the squeak weather the a/c is on or off..what i need to kno is which of the belts is it? can u inbox me with suggestions on which one it is or might be? thx dude!!

cory hanna says:

My 01 has 235k+ miles on it. At about 190k the timing belt snapped and every rod had to be replaced. TWAS A MESS!!

itsme78932 says:

The water pump was the one i was having difficulties with, it is keyed and 4 bolts. i found once you are able to get the bolts started, you can put a wrench on em and have someone turn the pulley the right way and they’ll tighten up easy.

WhoSaidTyler says:

You will. My former car(the video subject vehicle) is now up to 210,000 miles.

WhoSaidTyler says:

Ummm…you just loosen the adjusters on both those until the belt gets enough room to come off. He probably couldn’t figure out how those style adjusters work.

The PS pump you may be able to take off the bracket and spin it around to work on, but the alt will have to come off.

Next time don;t let him work on your car.

superfilipino says:

Need help

superfilipino says:

My father fucked my car up he unbolted two pulleys for power steering and alternator and having hard time putting two pulleys back and trying to put the 4 screws back in been doing it since 930 am up to 3pm my father an idiot I tried to get him to watch your video but he decided to take matters into his own hand now we are stuck trying to put the two pulleys back one for alternator and one for power steering so little space to try put screws into two pulley

itsme78932 says:

Just did the timing belt change on my 03 elantra today, 164,000 miles on the original belt 😡 Overall wasnt bad, at the same time i did the pulleys as well, the accessory belts, radiator (top tank had a 3-4″ crack), new radiator hoses, and coolant flush. Looking to get 200,000+ out of it 😛

WhoSaidTyler says:

It’s theoretically possible, but remember the car weighs 2500 lbs and the bolt is only torqued to a little less than 200ft lbs, so I wouldn’t worry about it.

1imesub says:

Is there any danger in using the “starter bump” crankshaft bolt removal technique? Any risk of the car falling off the jacks?

mustang1298 says:

hi , I need help with my 2000 tiburon, timing is completely off, and I can’t find timing marks for the crank, !

Same 2.0L engine

ARMZ0906 says:

So WhoSaidTyler, I have an 05 Elantra here and i was worderin if you might have some insight into this problem I’m havin. The maintenance on this thing has been kept up surprisingly well, however it has a rather rough idle at opp temp with the A/C off and after checkin all the usual suspects I can’t figure it out. Did you notice a similar problem with the one you were workin on and if so please enlighten me? Its not fuel, air, spark, t-belt, harmonic balancer, or motor mounts.

juny2020 says:

Oh, and forgot to mention the kit included the water pump and gasket as well.

juny2020 says:

Wow! I paid about $130 for the full kit, including the timing belt, idler, tensioner, all accessory belts, crankshaft and camshaft seals, and valve cover gasket. And had money left to get a professional grade 1/2 inch impact wrench from Harbor Freight for $71 with a 20% coupon (and on sale) which took out the crankshaft bolt on the first try! Not a difficult job to do…and I am a rookie.

juny2020 says:

Yes, virtually the same. I have a 1999 Elantra, which has the same engine as the 2000, and I am almost done with mine. Took a couple of days because it is the first timing belt change I’ve done. And, a million thanks for the video! I watched it many times and it made my work extremely easy thanks to your explanations!!!

WhoSaidTyler says:

Yes, it has virtually the same engine.

David Raustadt says:

2000 elantra much the same.

David Raustadt says:

Video helped me, Had a stripped out belt missing teeth, replaced it WITH NO VALVE DAMAGE !! runs great. broke a t low RPM, so YES it can break without Valve Damage.

greydawgjr says:

Thank you sir

Yourmindandme says:

lol – one person just paid $600 to have the dealer do this 😉

Yourmindandme says:

Great vid – thanks man!

KlutterKing says:

I must say that you’re an asset to youtube! People who share valuable information like this for free, improve the world!!! I hope that you continue to contribute! You saved me at least $400. Thank You.

WhoSaidTyler says:

and now you can!

hp11208 says:

i need to do a 05 manual trans t belt

kelsee zell says:

you know what lol, it was the power steering pump. I took the belt off the pump and the noise went away.. i was pretty happy, easy fix

WhoSaidTyler says:

Probably a couple hours. If you are getting noise it could also be the water pump.

kelsee zell says:

how long would it take to replace just the tensioner and timing guide? i already had the belt done, but they never replaced tensioner or guide, now im getting a noise and i know its that…im guessing 1.5hr flag time..

WhoSaidTyler says:

Hehe….no.

William Baldwin says:

Would it just be easyer to just take the engine right out and replace it on a bench or no?

WhoSaidTyler says:

That’s because it’s the best one on here. Keep coming back!
