Just a quick DIY video I put together for those of you tiburon owners who need a little guidence when replacing your water pump and timing belt.

Thanks for the great DYI! I have a question. How did you remove the bolt holding the harmonic balancer pulley on without using an air impact wrench? I have seen videos of putting a breaker bar on it and wedged against frame of car and then bumping starter (with ignition wires removed from coils) to remove it since the Tiburon V6 engine runs clockwise. Is this safe to do? Also then how do I tighten the bolt after replacing the timing belt and reassembling? Also do I need to replace cam seals?
How do you actually remove the power steering pulley? Every other video I’ve seen you need a special tool to push it on or off.
I used a 3 jaw puller if I remember correctly.
I have a question for you. Do you need to use the 3-jaw 6″ puller or you can you use a pulley puller? In other words, are there tapped holes so that you can thread bolts into the crankshaft pulley to pull it off.
thanks for posting. what kind of impact wrench do i need? 500lb? electric? i only have a 125 psi compressor and heard comments its not enough.
Hi, thanks for video, it’s great help.
by the way, I have tried timing belt changing of my hyundai but by mistake I turned RH cam sprocket about 11tooth to clock wise, I dont know what to do .Can I just turn the cam sprocket back ward( anti clock wise) to the timing mark? Can Anyone tell me how to fix this problem?
lol I guess I’ve been neglecting my channel, since the Tib has been down for like a year and a half. Be on the look out for a bunch more how to videos. I have a much better camera now so the how to’s should be waaaay better. NGM S/C coming in the near future as well.
Hey bog1e i commented 2 years ago on the power steering hose thing just wandering why it finally took you just now to reply back? LOL!
I think I did that just to have more room to work, and you’re probably right in that it’s not really a necessary step in all this. Thanks man.
Very good video I have ever seen. I have 2005 Kia Sportage 2.7L same as the one in this video. I have studied with only book & internet. Now I clearly understand the hand-on procedures thanks to your video, except how to use the 6″ 3-jaw puller to pull out the crankshaft pulley. I heard the pulley cosists of 2 parts. The outer part is bonded to inner one. So they are brittle. Where do I set the jaws on? Please picture if you have!
I really appreciate the effort you put into this video. Had i not watched it i may have not attempted to even do it.
So I heated the bolt up with a torch and hit it with the impact gun and it came right out. I hope I dont have to much trouble keeping the cams and crankshaft TDC while putting the belt on.
So I am having trouble getting my crankshaft polt out. It wont budge with the impact gun and I even tried clockwise thinking maybe it was a left hand thread. I have picked other people’s brains and nothing. The only thing I can think of is to use a torch and heat the bolt up and try the impact. Any thoughts or ideas? Also, I rotated the crank counter clockwise and I read somewhere afterwards not to do this. Can I not just rotate it clockwise again? This is on a 2002 hyundai sonata 2.7L
WOW sorry for the extremely late reply, this is more than likely not going to be the same as a 1.6, I am assuming you have an older model tiburon.
Excellent DIY! Really a big help for me. I’ve done some engine work but not timing belt/water pump.
Great Video , i was looking for this 2 days long …
Is this engine same with 1.6 tiby ???
Just wanted to thank you for taking the time and effort to make these two videos for timing belt replacement. This has been a huge help for me in replacing my own timing belt.
4:50, 5:05 not needed. 7:30 just unbolt the pump (2-14mm bolts) and move it out the way. Otherwise very cool vid.
Wow,the timing belt looked that good at that mileage,do you drive it hard? I have a agressive driving style……if that makes adifference on the wear pattern?I did just change the thermostat, and when I took out the original one,the rubber seal that is in the center was toast,so I put in a aftermarket one that does not have the rubber in the center,it did seem to help, but I am guessing with the 02 sonatas limited air flow, and 100 degrees and 90% HUMIDITY being my problem.
My water pump was done at about 110,000 miles. With the 2.7l tiburon our belts/waterpump are generally good until 100,000 miles. Most people change the belts and the water pump at about 60,000miles. My belt was still in good condition with no visible signs of wear when I took it out at 110,000 miles. Also before you go rip everything out check your thermostat. It’s always best to start with the cheap fixes first. Then work your way up to the more exspensive repairs.
Thanks for the quick reply,so now my question is,did you do the waterpump at 60,000 miles also when the timing belt was due? I have a 02′ sonata with the 2.7 with still only 53,000 on it,and it seems to heat up at idle in traffic kinda quick in the hot weather, but I am thinking it is just because of no air flow? These newer cars have such a high temp that the fan kicks on it is hard to tell, later.
Well I think I caused my water pump to fail. I may have had a slightly lean mix of h2o to antifreeze in -20 degree weather. So when I went to start up the tib, the water pump impeller just spun off the shaft. I remember it making a screech sound. I had a about 110,000 miles at the time.
At how many miles did you start to have problems? Any strange clicking noises or anything coming from this side of the engine?
Hey bog1e, this doesn’t make sense why do you have to take the passenger headlight and disconnect the power steering hose for? theres no need for that and can be worked around it.
