Gas tank isn’t the place you want to take short cuts on. Vibration and
jumps can cause the crack to open up abruptly and dump gas all over you. A
hundred bucks isn’t worth your life bro.
Hi James, dude, have other mod to fix the gas tank ? my gas tank broke and
i try fix and dont works. i want to try like you teach, but i live in
brazil and i dont know if here have this glue, you know if have others
glue like this? waiting a reply, thanks dude!
Good start with the soldering iron but I would just drag the iron along the
crack at a rate slow enough to seal the crack but not slow enough to go
through the surface and leave a hole. I didn’t find any need to sand the
area before using the iron. I have then found the next best step is to find
a plastic container that has the letters “HDPE molded on the bottom. This
is High-density polyethylene, the same material that your tank is made out
of. I then cut some 1/4 – 3/8” strips from this container. You can then
light one end of the strip and holding it about a half inch from your tank,
let it drip slowly over the cracked area. go slow enough so that the new
HDPE bonds itself to the tank material from it heat. You can put a number
of layers on the area and spread it past where you scared it with the
soldering iron for a better bond. This will do better and give you a much
smoother finish.
Epoxy does not stick very well to the waxy HDPE type plastics that gas
tanks are made of. A more durable solution would be to use HDPE filler rods
and weld it.
You first melt it back together. No the holes do not go all the way
through. The holes provide something for the epoxy to really cling to. Work
the epoxy down into the holes. And yes its still holding.
