I have a 98 Toyota 4Runner and It keeps having fuel sensor problems.
Already dumped 80+ to get it “fixed” but only lasted a day… any ideas
what I could do for that?

Thank you Nick, you saved me over 385 dollars :-)

Kyle Maes says:

Everyone said use brake cleaner… I used it… My MAF reads high and
engine doesnt idle unless i gold my finger infront of the sensor so it
reads less… It worked before though so i dont know whats going on… I am
going to do a full cleaning before attempting purchasing another

Can you advise how to do this on a Mitsubishi Galant?

Simply a massive thank you for sharing your knowledge freely on youtube

Hey, thanks for the vid. I was wondering… I have a 2000 Land Rover Disco
2 and currently I can’t get it to stay idling. It starts up fine and runs
as long as I give it a little gas but as soon as I let go of the gas it
shuts right off. I’ve had a few people tell me to replace the MAF sensor
(they haven’t checked out the vehicle or anything). I was wondering what
your opinion is. Could simply cleaning it fix the issue if it is indeed the
MAFS that’s causing it?

C Galhano says:

Will WD40 work to clean the MAF ?

Debra Switzer says:

@anti that sounds like a fuel pump issue or a fuel filter , replace it and
it should be a easy fix

Rob Therealtor says:

thanks!

if the CRC mass air fow cleaner (or any brand) is not available, what are

instead?

Thank you. I just cleaned after I watched your video. The former owner told
me he used to get the engine check light on and he used to use this spray.
He said use if u see that light on but I didn’t know how to do it. I did
know and your video is helpful. Thank you. I will see how it goes.

Michael Gee says:

Two silly questions I have please;
1. Can I do this in cold weather?
2. Do I plug in the sensor immediately after cleaning, or let it dry? Or
wipe it down? You didn’t show the best method for re installing it?
Thanks

Jesse Rakowski says:

That is all it is the little sensor piece? Not the big round thing that
kind of looks like a honey comb? I think I need to clean mine….my
silverado is running rough

Mark Edwards says:

Hi Nick… Thanks for posting such a helpful video. My question is: I
decided to clean my MAF after getting a “Service Engine Soon” indicator and
running a computer diagnostic that indicated something wrong with the MAF.
After cleaning the MAF as you suggested, I am still getting the “Service
Engine Soon” indicator. Will this turn off after a while on its own?
Thanks, Mark

Robert O'Donnell says:

THANK YOU…really appreciate your free help…I would have definitely used
my Carb Cleaner….could have ruined MAF sensor….MAF cleaner cost
$8.50…new sensor would have cost $208 !!!! thanks again

i have a Toyota Camry 2003 XLE 4 cyl. replace battery and experience idling
issue. Tried driving around so computer can learn new idling level drove a
lot both city and hway about 60 miles already but no luck, know eventually
it will learn but too DANGEROUS new drivers should NEvER do this and in
fact nobody should

just solved this issue today and did these three things:

a. Clean throttle body. Use this link
b. Replace air filter and clean area while throttle body unit is out.
c. Clean mass Air flow sensor – use the advise on this video – a BIG thank
you..

idling is working on the onset no need to drive around to learn idling.

Do not compromise use MAF cleaner and TB cleaner if you do not have one buy
online or any auto store.

Lastly, not all auto mechanics know this solution or (will not tell you),
and may tell you to drive around. Anyway, you can ask the mechanic to do
these three steps first.

Thanks again.

Nick, Is this what I would remove and replace if I were going to a Jet
Performance Powr-Flo Mass Air Sensor? What are the best sensors in your
opinion? Is it worth it to upgrade? Thanks for any advice

James Underwod says:

Hi Nick. Just watched your video, thanks. Just wondering, you seem to know
what your doing, any chance you might be able to send me a private message,
had a few things I wanted to ask you. Cheers mate

I have a 5.0 97 Chey C1500. You say to really spray the crap out of it, but
I was told just to give it a shot or two on the connectors and the unit its
self but your say different. The kid behind the counter was really very
helpful. Also does the out side temp matter when doing this? Thank you for
your time.

Antonio Navarro says:

Hi Nick. Is a dirty MAF sensor could trigger an engine light on?
Thanks. Tony

antisoc1al says:

Hey I have a 2000 Buick Regal GS. Intermittently when I press on the gas
it will stutter…my RPM will drop when it happens…if I was to compare it
to any noise it would be like F1 cars changing gears quickly. When I come
to stop signs and red lights, my car will stall on me.

Pulled some P0102 and P0172 codes off my friends OBD2 scanner.

He thinks it’s the MAF.

Before I go have mine replaced, do you recommend that I try doing what you
do in this video? Or from what I said is the MAF already beyond repair?

Also, after you spray it down, do you reinstall it while it’s still wet or
do you dry it off first?

Thanks.

jlc7300 says:

Hi Nick, I liked your video! I was told NOT to hold the can of spray real
close when spraying the maf as the pressure of the spray could damage the
wires, I have a 2000 corolla that I want to clean. What is your opinion of
this? Thanks, John

just got that, was wondering if this is what i need to do.

EndofUSA says:

Thank you Nick. I’ll do what you adviced.

Edward Gephart says:

Thank’s for the advice will clean the throttle body and check plugs an
wires and all connecetions just waiting for the weather to change

pepe64 says:

Nick, do you think cleaning the MAF sensor could also solve a “check
engine” message showing code P0174: system too lean?

NewOrleansMan504 says:

Question Mr. Nick. I have a drag racing car that I have been racing for
years, But I don’t have allot of experience with all this computer crap. I
know it takes fire and fuel to make a motor run.. I have a friend with a
2001 Mercury Sable 3.0 EFI with out the DOHC.. It was running rough off and
on ( rough a little then perfect for awhile).. Then it wouldn’t start, so
she left it there for 4 days, then somebody came to look at it and it
started up and ran fine, but after a few days back to running rough a
little then running fine again.. Now it didn’t want to start again, so I
went to look at it for her. First I checked for fire and it had good fire,
then I turned the key on and I can hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds
then shut off. She had a can of starting fluid by her house that someone
else tried spraying to get it running because he thought the fuel pump went
out, but it didn’t even try to crank up, but he took the air duck loos by
the throttle body and sprayed it there.. I just took it loose at the air
filter and shot a little of starting fluid in and it cranked right up and
ran perfect, ran it for awhile no problems, left it sit for 2 hours came
back out and it cranked right up and still ran perfect… So my question
is, the way I sprayed the starting fluid in it, it hit the Mass Air Flow
sensor.. So do you think I should go buy some MAF sensor cleaner and give
the MAF sensor a good cleaning??

3213victor says:

thank you

brittanybrilliantify says:

Can the check engine light come on due to a dirty MAF? Or does the light
only come on if the MAF has failed and needs to be replaced? Thanks!

Nick Stageberg says:

Yes it has a MAF and yes it can absolutely cause your engine to misfire.
You would see random misfire on all cylinders.

Nick Stageberg says:

It could be, you might also want to look at cleaning the throttle body.

Michael Niedetzki says:

Thank you for the upload, and also, thank you for the comment instructing
to ensure it’s dry before starting the engine. I just picked up throttle
body cleaner and was reading other users’ posts about removing the MAF
before cleaning it.. I’m glad there was a video showing how easy it is to
clean it. I drive a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GT 3.8L, and I have an
aftermarket K&N air filter installed. My car has a code for running too
lean, and I thought it could just be the fuel pump going. Thank you
