Hey there, I have a 1999 grand prix gt and thus has happened to me three
times! It’ll just randomly cut off on me driving down the road. The first
time it shut off at a red light but would turn over, the Rpms would jump
from 500 to 1000 and back and forth then would die. apparently my coolant
elbows (lack of coolant and they were cracked?) And my ignition mod was
fried. Worked perfectly fine until exactly a week later where it just
completely shut off down the road. Couldn’t get it to start. Apparently the
computer somehow unplugged itself? Then I got it back ran fine up until
Monday where I was going forty and it completely shut off on me. No service
engine light, no trac control light, nothing. Was so frustrated! Tried
starting it but it didn’t turn over. It would crank but would not turn
over. So I called a tow yet again but about two minutes later it turned
again. Has been running like normal since then but I’m afraid it’ll happen
again.. what does this sound like to you? I keep getting mixed answers and
I just really need a second opinion, I’m losing my mind over this!

MrandMrsBergner says:

hi I see you interact a lot I actually didn’t watch the video yet but want
to ask if you have any experience with a 1992 Oldsmobile 88 Royal that
drives fine on short trips. On longer trips or if I sit idle for a while
then it looses power and dies. It starts right back up after I get stopped
it will start and go for a while before it loses power and dies again.
Sometimes I push the pedal all the way to the floor and it only goes like
20 mph. thank you for any information.

Hello Scott, I have a 1991 Toyota me n/a. The problem I’m having is that
when I’m driving for about an hour my car suddenly stalls and won’t turn
over until it cools down…I’ve recently changed the ignition coil,
ignition module, the distributor cap and rotor. Ive also changed the main
relays. I have no idea what else can be done to fix it, any suggestions?
Thanks

Hey, I have a toyota camry 98 and my car dies when switching gears. It
starts and in park you can accelerate but when you switch to drive, reverse
or neutral it dies. I cleaned my IAC value and im not sure if its faulty or
not. The shutter inside the value doesnt move freely so I dont know if
thats good or bad. It started doing this two days ago, first shutting off
in traffic but I was able to start the car back up and drive off but the
car would die again at a red light. The next day trying to cold start the
car would not move. Help please.

Hi sir, Im having a problem with my 1994 toyota camry. my engine dies while

possible problem with my car?

Jorge Lopez says:

Scotty I just bought a 2004 Volvo V70 and was driving on the highway when
suddenly everything died and like restated right away on it’s own. It
happened like three times within an hour drive. Later as I was driving at
approx 25 mph in a dark area my high beams wouldn’t stay on so I held the
lever back and all of a sudden the whole instrument cluster was off not
reading speed or anything. Any idea what this might be? Could it be a short
or ECM issue? When I bought it the battery was dead and just bought a new
one. Thanks so much

Byron Pelico says:

Hi scotty , I have honda accord 91 it has the check engine light on, but I

um having car problem were the car keeps cutting off on me what could that
be could you please

what could it be

alex green says:

Hey Scott got a question regarding a 2010 Nissan Sentra that has all the
symptoms you mention in your video. While driving it I got to a stop sign
and it died, started right up, but I no acceleration, loss of power, pull
to the side, started again the it was fine, was good for about 2 weeks,
then as I was leaving my house the same issues, hesitates no power when
stepping on the gas, shuts off, start again and its ok, I borrowed an
Autotap scanner from a friend but there are no codes in the system. I even
drove it for about 30 minutes with the autotap connected recording the
data, but nothing happened the car is ok now, do you think that without any
codes, it could still be related to the crankshaft and camshaft sensor, I
read that it is recommended to replace both if you do any of them. Any
advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated, this is driving me
nuts….

Thanks
Alex

Daniel Millard says:

What does that electrical grease do?.

Abe Voelker says:

Just an FYI that you can buy a Bluetooth OBD II adapter for $10-25 on
Amazon, and there is an Android app called Torque that can run Mode $06
tests if you buy the Pro version ($5). But if you just need to check and
clear codes, the Torque Lite (free) version works fine.

Rafa Hechavarria says:

By the way on my Jeep as mentioned it was the camshaft sensor. This is
probably 99% of all newer car problems.

DINGDONG says:

Hi Scotty,
Have a 96′ Accord daily driver. It sometimes doesn’t want to start (no
engine turning over sound when I turn the key to start ignition) and I
would have to jump it with a back up portable battery jump starter. I have
a new battery that’s less than a year old though. I was driving yesterday
and the car died altogether, tried to turn it back on and this time the
engine was turning over but wouldn’t start. Tried it a couple more times
and still didn’t work. I hooked up the battery jump starter and it started
right up. I am not sure if this if fuel related, electrical related, or
both. Would you help me diagnose this issue Scotty.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. As of right now I don’t have a ODB
scanner and if this is an expensive fix, i’ll just let the baby go. Had
tranny work along with a bunch of other maintenance work done two years ago
as I didn’t want to let her go, but sometimes you have to call it in.

Jack Daniels says:

Done plugs, wires, distributor, coil, cam sensor, maf sensor, new air
filter, fuel filter, pump is good, injector cleaner, what could still be
causing this? No codes stored or live. I’m at a dead end, please help me
Scotty.

Jesus Garcia says:

Hi Scotty just bought my first vehicle a 1998 vw jetta. I have been told
that my sensor is in the distributor. I replaced it and timed it and still
it cuts off. I need help please.

Ed Ali says:

Scotty, I have a 99′ Civic. Changed the alternator almost a year ago.
Recently, it occasionally dies out every once in a while, that is while
being driven. Changed the battery, but it happened again. The red rubber on
the battery terminal wasn’t on, I put it on correctly. Although, I suspect
it is something else that is causing this.

Mark El-Deiry says:

+Scotty Kilmer – I have a 2002 Maxima with 130K miles on it. I have had
this same problem since Monday but with an added complication.

It SEEMS to be killing the battery in the process. I had a strong battery
(750 CCA, only 18 months old) and the car died while driving everyday from
Monday through Friday.

Finally on Friday, I went and bought a new battery with 800 CCA. It started
up quickly and drove alright for about 40 minutes. I stopped it and met
with a friend for about 30 minutes. Started again and it started right up.

Drove for another hour on local roads and then… it happened again!
Turning the key just gave me an electrical clicking sound but no cranking.

I tried to get a jump from a friendly local. It did crank a little bit but
it was not enough to get it running so I called for a tow. While waiting
for the tow, I put the key in the on position and I heard a strong
electrical buzz coming from the driver’s side of the engine block (right
where I later learned the camshaft sensor would be).

The tow had a powerful portable jump starter which DID get it started but
it stayed on for only about 5-10 minutes. So I got towed home. Even if the
alternator is completely dead, would less than 2 hours of local driving on
a new battery with 800 CCA and 62 amp hours kill a battery completely or is
it likely there is a short somewhere in the car which is draining the power
supply very rapidly?

I have read about a problem with the camshaft sensors and crankshaft
sensors on this car (I checked – I was not included in the recall) and ALL
the symptoms (including other symptoms) I had seemed to match. Could there
be a short in a sensor which is draining the battery that fast?

My thinking is that a short in a camshaft sensor specifically would
explain: (1) the extreme drain on the battery and need for very high
amperage to start, (2) the stalling while driving (as mentioned in this
video), and (3) the electrical clicking sound without cranking while trying
to restart (because if those sensors think the shafts are out of position,
they will not let the car crank in order to prevent damage to the valves
and piston heads which could smash together if the shafts are out of
position).

Am I interpreting this right?
