great job on the description of the tstat replacement. Did you get it OEM from dealer or from local auto shop
run hose water through it till totally clean water comes out run clean water a lot. later run distilled water to wash every bit of the tap water out well.
dont blah blah on how CLR eats alumimum! It will damage it if you are funny to hold over 25 min max. if you do it right you can declare victory if you don’t right, dont be funny doing it wrong. do it right and your aluminum core will stay intact.
replace thermostat at end to ensure you are really through with overheating and not be back at it
you could have the radiator clogged with lime scale etc… no matter what you try it will not cure the overheating problem unless you replace the radiator or try this cure:
three bottles of 28 ounces each, 5-6 bucks from walmart each . CLR cleaner (calcium , lime , rust words written on its gray bottle) dump in the empty radiator, top off with distilled water cheap from walmart. immediately ride it for 15 minutes, stop let fans cycle few times, in total 20 to 25 minutes drain it
sorry to say it is a head gasket… I have replaced everything on mine from thermostat, radiator, flushed the system and still overheats during slow or idle but goes away when driving fast on a hwy.
i have read about blue devil head gasket sealant.. some say it works some say it doesnt… i am going to try it and let you know the results

My 01 Civic is getting hot while sitting idle, I wonder if this is my issue
FYI you actually did the installation wrong because you just dont throw in the new thermostat in with out facing the pin upwards, because if the pin on the thermostat isnt facing the upwards position the thermostat will actually fail with in a couple of weeks once the wax on the thermostat is gone.
