Power Steering Pump Overhaul/Rebuild 2002 Honda Odyssey

This is a detailed video of my procedure for performing a complete overhaul and rebuild of the power steering pump on a 2002 Honda Odyssey. At 178000 miles, it developed a leak and I decided…

The manual does not specify a part number but it may be a NTN 6303LU
(17x40x12). You should be able to cross reference the number off the old
one and get one at a bearing shop, online, or an auto parts store like
NAPA.

SUPEROBSCUREBEATS says:

i did a backwards experimentation of what you did lol … replaced high
pressure hose first, which was leaking though, yet my pump was also
leaking, so that got replaced within the next few days!

Kevin - says:

By any chance, did you get the part number for the bearing? Nice video,
btw.

Andrin Poopfong says:

And oh, my rebuild kit from acurapartssource.com (EBAY) cost 32 dollars
with three bottles of fluid and main bearing.

h dunkan says:

Good video, you explained pretty good thanks

SUPEROBSCUREBEATS says:

great vid if an overhaul is worth your time, but a quality remanufactured
one costs around $90-$120 & literally takes 15 min from start to finish to
complete the install. to me personally, it was worth the $60 difference
(paid $90 for my pump) to save the time & hassle. then again, if you need
to save the $60 or so bucks … great vid

Thanks for posting! My problem was simpler. Our 2003 Odyssey developed a
noisy power steering pump and I was advised to “just swap out the o-rings”
which seemed pretty simple until we tried it. All the other videos on
YouTube show how to change the o-rings on Accords, but I couldn’t find ones
for the Odyssey. The top O-Ring is easy to do, but the bottom one requires
you to remove the bolt under the inlet and I wasn’t sure of the sequence of
steps to get to that bolt. I figured I needed to remove the pulley, but
until I discovered your video I didn’t really have a clear idea. Your clear
and concise video really helped me to understand the process, but I could
get away with not removing the entire pump from the vehicle, so it was
simpler. One thing that I did wrong on reassembly was not noticing the two
different surfaces on the two sides of the pulley itself, so before I
completed the job, I watched your video again, and realized the welded
side went out and the smooth side goes toward the pump, so… I pulled the
pulley, reversed it, and all is well. Getting to the inlet bolt to tighten
isn’t easy, you need a short stubby wrench, a socket won’t fit there. I
should note the two o-rings combined are under 2 bucks from Honda, and our
local dealer quoted around $100 for the labor. Love to see a video showing
just how to change out the o-rings on the Odyssey, but since you did a
total rebuild, won’t expect one! My o’rings were flat and brittle as
well. Thanks again, your video made this repair possible before a big snow
storm hit!

Спасибо большое помогло очень

Patty Caro says:

Question when removing the power steering pump and replacing it, can you
damage pulley, reason I ask is the mechanic shop replaced my power steering
pump and now my pulley wobbles a bit, did not do it before, so took it back
and they said it needed a new pulley so I paid and the new one also wobbles
now the same. Why is it wobbling and is it dangerous to drive, I have kids
so I’m concerned.

NOBOX7 says:

thanks for posting friend , im looking for a small pump like this to use as
a hydraulic motor for a D&R project and this thing looks perfect, i suppose
i will have to remove the flow control valve .

John Gerken says:

Process has been going great. Terrific in fact, right up until the time
when I was getting ready to torque down the nut on the pulley to the
requisite 47 foot pounds. Somehow the 3/8 inch extension I’d used to brace
the pulley got loose and now it is GONE. I’ve pulled back the wheel well
cover and been all over the car. It is nowhere to be found. Any ideas as
to where it might have gone that I can’t locate with a flashlight from
above, below and beside the engine?

Terry Anderson says:

Both are very great videos; clear, well explained. I’m a new bee into the
car stuff. This motivates me a lot in working on my odyssey 2005 in the
future. Had changed the front brake pads and bled the brake on it 2 months
ago. Next project on my plate is changing the engine/transmission mounts
on the odyssey. I’m in the process of gathering information for the
project. Thanks a lot. My other cars are the Civic 2009 and Solara 2005.

h dunkan says:

Just a question,i have volvo power steering problem with the pulley,I tried
to take off but i so hard, seems like they use sealer lock, and I’m afraid to
break it,is a plastic one, give me any trick i appreciate it.

semut gedik says:

very good explaination, clear vdeo. thanks to u admin for that information.

eason chen says:

what is the purpose of removing the sub valve?

Andrin Poopfong says:

Thanks so much. Worked perfectly on a 2004 Acura TL. I even removed the
backplate in the down position and the whole cam/fin housing dropped out in
1 piece (and didn’t even need to be pulled apart) as your advice was
correct. INVALUABLE!! THANKS!!!

John Gerken says:

Very, very nicely done video. Clear, concise and easy to follow. Thanks
for taking the time to record it. My pump is making quite a bit of noise.
It’s loosing some fluid but very little overall. I suspect the bearings
may be suspect. If the bearing makes noise once I’ve pulled the pump,
would you replace the pump or pursue finding a replacement bearing?

Thanks again for the excellent work. I’ll be doing this over New Years, so
I’ll let you know how it goes.
…John

Paul S says:

There is no way in hell I could of rebuilt the Power Steering Pump of my
2005 Honda Odyssey without this video. Thanks so much for taking the time
for creating and editing this video. By the way, the only difference with
the 2005 Od was how to loosen the tension on the belt. Oh yes, and it
fixed the problem. Nice job.

rover2007514 says:

Awesome video and great attention to detail. Does the shop manual happen
to tell you what the part number for the main bearing is? I’m such a
knucklehead I mucked up the bearing re-seating it into the housing. Put
everything back together and it’s worse now than before! :(

Mido Mahmoud says:

For Honda Accord Owner: I’ve had 2 recalls from Honda deanship, one of the
was replacing the entire power steering pump for FREE. So you guys should
call and ask if your car have a recalls. I’ve 2003 Honda Accord Coupe V6
btw.

thien ma says:

i am about to replace power steering on my mdx 2002, after watched this
video , its makes my work more easier , thanks for this video …

Chris CHOI says:

OMG… how can I fix 2005 ody
I want do this like this Vedio.
what can i do… @ . @

marek0086 says:

Hardly a rebuild!. All you did was change the seals!.

Cynthia Buccola says:

I learned a lot by watching your video. My guess is that you either work on
cars for a living or have had some training. Your vernacular and calmness
as well as your great closeup pics are worth many words. Thank you.

Jeya Paramalingam says:

best instructional video, explained all very well, keep up the good work…

Dan Barry says:

That was the best instructional video I’ve ever seen … thanks so much and
keep them coming!! My problem a bad top O ring on my power steering pump
(2007 Accord V6) which caused whining… I replaced for $2 and was off to
the races, but I watched your entire video even after my repair just cause
I couldn’t seem to turn it off… Brilliant.

Joey Drevnak says:

Very informative, easy to do! For an hour of my time and a $20 kit this is
very do-able.

marek0086 says:

Hey, brosef, you already damaged the bearing when u removed it!.

SuperSharpBlue says:

Excellent, very informative! I purchased the overhaul kit a few months back
for my 01 accord and the pump is very similar if not the same as the one on
your Odyssey. Will be trying this tomorrow with my service manual and your
video!

Thamir Alqurashi says:

simply AMAZING video , greeting from Saudi Arabia

John F. Hyland says:

Awesome, detailed video. I am going to give this a shot myself tomorrow. My
power steering pump keeps blowing the top off the reservoir and spitting
out fluid. I’ve flushed the system a couple times and replaced the
reservoir. I have a feeling the culprit might be that O ring that you said
usually goes bad. Thanks for the video. I never would have thought I could
do this myself before watching this.

Paul S says:

Great video fixing the wrong problem. See his same video on fixing the
power steering high pressure hose which was the real problem. I am shocked
that the author, who seems very thorough and detailed, did not update this
video telling everyone he had misdiagnosed the problem and that one should
not attempt to rebuild the power steering pump until they thoroughly check
the high pressure hose.

those1kidds says:

amazing video sir. I am getting ready to do this tomorrow, wish me luck!
Quick question, how many 12 oz power steering fluid bottles did you need
to use to fill it back up? And yes I will be using the genuine honda kind
(: Thanks again for the very well made video!

RogerN Wahlberg says:

Thanks for the detail. Great help to success.

arielatom03 says:

doesnt applying excesive force to your ratchets damage them?, i was always
taught to use breaker bars for breaking bolts loose.

ShanePerkins3D says:

Did the job today. Now that its all together I am not getting any fluid
drop in the reservoir and the steering is very stiff. Any thoughts?

René Javier says:

Excellent work. You are setting a higher standard for automotive “How to”
repair videos on YT. I like the attention to detail and references to the
documentation. Thank you.

George Soto says:

my car was leaking and I did everything as the video explains, noise is
gone but now steering wheel is stiff. I used honda fluid. what could cause
this?

MrSimpleGoodies says:

Ever thought about taking out the transmission to do an overhaul? That
would be a cool video. I have checked out Eric the car guy vids, and he has
shown the inside of the transmission. What’s your thoughts about lubing
nuts and bolts with vaseline or some other cheap lubricant around the
vehicle? I hate all the rusty bolts and wonder if there is a way to prevent
all that crap. just paid 1700 bucks to have the dealer change the rear main
oil seal & replace the rack/pinion…. the rack/pinion (reman.) part was
like 700 bucks! they sure do make some money off those reman. I would have
done the work myself, but I don’t have an engine support thingy, and it
probably would have taken me 12x the amount of hours that the honda tech
did it!

hubbleISS says:

Clear, detailed process, nice video!

blackericdenice says:

I just rebuilt my sister 96 Accord with a $13 kit from ebay. She could not
believe how easy it was.

David Sullivan says:

Outstanding video…like a magic trick, it’s easy when you know /see how
it’s done. I rebuilt my 99 ody pump based on this video. Sure it’s easier
to replace the entire pump but where’s the fun in that. Your attention to
detail was surpassed only by the simplicity with which you performed the
work! My only difficulty was returning the shaft/bearing into the housing.
The 30 mm socket worked to a point but was to large to clear the housing.
I used a 29mm socket to seat the bearing for the snap ring. If you have
any other Odyssey repair videos I’d enjoy watching all of them…Thanks for
taking the time to share your knowledge with those of us who are always
learning and trying to do more with less!

Tim L says:

Awesome video it really helped. Changed out leaking pump on 03 ody didn’t
have time or proper tools to overhaul. Replaced with remanufactured pump.
Have you had to replace any motor mounts on your odyssey? I think that is
next on the list.
