David Sweeney says:

Yep. I went through a couple… each time hoping the visor would be re-engineered.

You definitely need to do this fix on them… to keep them from breaking again.

tino dumpit says:

HI David,
Unfortunately it is a Honda Design flaw and this is the second that got broke on our Honda 2007 Civic Si. the first time it happened, Honda replaced it for free. If you are under 100k on your miles and if it is broken.. go get it fixed at the dealer. They would not change ours the second time because we are 130k on the car. Thanks for the video.. going to fix it with 80 cents screws. Thank you

Dvillaneda says:

yeah there is a warranty on the visors but it only covers it if the car has under 100,00 miles or 7 years from the original purchase date of the car.

David Sweeney says:

Great to know it can be that far broken, and still repair it!

Thanks for the post. I’m sure others will appreciate that news as well.

Jim Schrand says:

David – great video. My visor was almost completely split but was able to push spring part back in with a screwdriver, hold it together with a clamp, then use the post screws per your suggestion. Worked great and saved me $60! Thanks!

Yafu Wang says:

Found them in Lowes. At home depot, it is called Binding Post

David Sweeney says:

Home Depot has it in their specialty hardware area. It’s the ones you’ll see that are in drawers with other funky parts.

You can just describe to them that it’s a 5/8″ Aluminum Threaded Post with Screw.

If you can’t find it there, try Lowes Home Improvement, if there’s one in your area.

Google won’t allow me to post a link, but just Google “Hilman 5/8″ threaded post w/scr”

there a link there to the Hilman site that show a detailed picture of it.

Yafu Wang says:

Thanks, David, a great instruction. I have a problem to find Hilman Threaded Post w/schrew at home depot. I asked somebody working there and they don’t have a clue. Can you give a help on that — where to find it, and does it have another name? Thanks for your help

David Sweeney says:

Thanks for posting your success, Jason!

Jason Lowery says:

THX that worked good

David Sweeney says:

Gracias, me alegro que funcionó

alberto cabrera says:

eres chingonn

Joe Moe says:

Thank you very much; I will try this. I had been looking for a replacement visor from another car make but did not find any that would fit.

David Sweeney says:

Thanks Chubby.

Some have posted about the settlement and have said it only covers the vehicle up to 100,000 miles.

I have been telling people that even if you get Honda to replace your visor… still do the fix. Since Honda has never address the design flaw, the visors will just break again.

chubby nex says:

There is actually a LAWSUIT SETTLEMENT ON THE HONDA CIVIC SUN VISOR. You should be able to get a refund for your replacement or Honda should replace it for free. When calling the dealership service, they are not forthcoming about this, talk to a high manager and reference the lawsuit. Google this or look under TopClassActionsdotcom. Either way, thank you David for the helpful video. I hope this is helpful info.

roscoemommasboy says:

thanks for video i will try this fix!!!

Bao Nguyen says:

Thank you so much. I just fix it and it was easy.

David Sweeney says:

Great!

Silasa Sok says:

i just did mine. works like a charm! bought it at lowes for 80 cents so you have to buy 2. either 1.60 or 70 dollars! thanks for the video, saved me money! 3/8 works perfect!

David Sweeney says:

Thanks for the comments, Tony. Glad it worked for you.

tony reveles says:

I typed in “how to fix a car visor” and this was the first video that showed up. Thanks David! I just fixed my broken visor in my 2011 civic. The directions you gave were very easy and I had it fixed in about 10-15 minutes. Thanks for saving me time and money!

David Sweeney says:

Thanks WIllie!

Someone else posted that the 1/2″ works perfectly fine. So if that’s all they had, it will work!

-Dave

Willie Baneham says:

Thanks for the great idea. Just to add a little clarity, Hillman is a BRAND name, not a type of screw. Its an aluminum post and scree thats needed, and there are a few makers.

Interestingly, I did go to Lowes here in Canada, Hillman is the brand they carry, but all the 5/8″ were sold out! Guess theres lots being repaired after this video. Good work, and thanks.

matu4251 says:

Toyota has the same problem. I have it on a Venza but I’ve seen people complaining about their Camry and Rav4. Thanks for the video.

David Sweeney says:

Thanks for the info, I am sure that will help others north of our border.

Thanks so much for sharing!

Charles Samuel says:

Thanks for your excellent video. For those Canadians wanting to fix their visors…. I had trouble finding Hillmans (we don’t have a Lowes in our city), however, Home Depot had the screw made by Paulin..it is called a Chicago screw. They did not carry 5/8. I used a 1/2″ with 13/64 drill bit. Everything went well. Thanks.

David Sweeney says:

The heat is definitely a big factor in these visors visors breaking.

Mine have now held up for nearly a year and a half with no signs of failing yet.

Thanks for the comment!

Trenton Jackson says:

Thanks for the video!!! Just fixed my visors. After a month or so of them dangling, I just couldn’t take it anymore! It also doesn’t help that my car stays outside all the time…

David Sweeney says:

You are 100% correct, Susan.. on both accounts..

The heat definitely exacerbates the issue, and Honda has done a horrible job of designing the visors!

Honda has also refused to address the issue and just keeps selling replacement visors that will also break.

Every time my visors broke, it was in the summer.

Thanks for the posting, am thrilled to see so many people fixing their visors. It’s really aggravating to pour money into something you know is just going to break again.

Susan Martyn says:

I like others have had this problem. My sons watched your video and fixed my visors. It seems to me like it is the heat that causes them to break. What do you think? Maybe it is just a bad design too. Thank you for sharing your technique for repairing the visors.

David Sweeney says:

Sweet. Glad it worked out, Tony!

I spent the $70 so many times, I don’t even want to count.

It’s really too bad that Honda won’t relent and fix the problem for good!

Tony Vargas says:

dude you saved me 70 bucks! thnx great video!!

Larrnix Moua says:

wow, man having the same prob with mine too! Thanks a many!

David Sweeney says:

Not dumb!

As long as the visor can still go cleanly back together… the fix will work.

My driver side visor had just started to separate, and the fix has held mine nicely.

I did have one visor that had completely come apart, and I could save it.

You can always try the repair, and if it doesn’t work you can reuse the parts on a new visor.

Keep in mind that Honda never fixed the issue, and if you don’t the repair, it WILL break eventually.

Jose Guillermo Arguedas says:

Awesome!!! I’m from Costa Rica, I called Honda, the replace in here is around $120, so expensive!!! I just get my new replacement directly from US and I’m planning to do the same in a while! This workaround just made save a lot of money!

Erin Daoust says:

Thank you so much for this fix! I even found screw covers that make the screws less visible.

mgrantaz says:

The 1/2″ worked fine and the screw went in about half way into the post, about 8 threads, plenty to hold. See my earlier post.

mgrantaz says:

Use the 1/2″ from Home Depot, if the 5/8″ is not available. Yesterday I bought all 3 sizes that they had: 1/2, 3/4, and 1″. They didn’t have 5/8″ the recommended. Sizing them up against the visor, I thought 1/2″ would work and catch enough of the threads. The 1/2″ worked fine and the screw went in about half way into the post, about 8 threads, plenty to hold.

jllindahl says:

Thanks David. Worked great.

Roberta Schultz says:

I am a female, followed video / instructions and it worked like a charm. Called Honda and they wanted an arm and a leg to purchase and install. Thank you for the fix.
