How to fix Leaky Honda Pilot

My 2005 Honda Pilot would leak when parked in the rain. This video shows what I did to fix it.

Thanks for the video. It helped immensely. Google “Honda Pilot water leak”
and this is a common problem. Yet not according to my local Honda dealer in
Langley BC Canada. Yonker was no help and said they never heard of the
problem. BS! Looks like Honda owners are forced to fix water leaks
themselves because of poor design by Honda and poor service after the
purchase. There is actually a memo from Honda to its dealerships about this
problem. I found it in one of the Honda Pilot forums.

I repaired this at home by myself. Turn the front tire to one side in order
to remove part of the plastic inner fender. Pop the bottom 6 plastic pins
out of the fender. Wrap the wire harness with electrician’s tape as water
runs through the wires into the cabin. The top hole holds the wire harness
as seen in the video. The middle hole usually has the sunroof drain tube
sticking out – do not plug this. Use caulking to seal up any hole or crack
in the vicinity that could leak water.

This video shows the inside of the fender so you can see the area to be
repaired. You don’t have to remove the fender to make this repair. You also
don’t have to remove all of the parts inside the dashboard. You may need to
remove the seat to lift up the carpet in order to dry the floor. The video
doesn’t show that you also have to wrap the wire harness with tape so the
water does not leak into the cabin. Read my other posts and you will be
able to figure out how to make this repair.

Hey kookoo I saw the pdf about taping the wire harness did you do that to
your pilot? Im going to try fix mine this weekend I have lots of water
inside, all the snow was melting after this big storm here in chicago I
heard water dripping behind the dash on the passenger side while I was
driving then i felt the floor and it was really wet.

Thanks for the post. From reading the piloteers forum this is a common
problem. Ours is at the mechanic right now.

mine has the same problem 2004 and I did all these and still leaks.

kookookitchoo says:

The bottom part of the fender has 6 black Phillips head screws that hold
the plastic bottom. While it is off clean out any mud, leaves, etc. that
may be blocking the water drain hole at the bottom of the fender. There is
a hard foam insert inside the side wall that can be moved aside to clean
out any debris blocking the bottom drain hole. Purchase new pop pins to
replace the plastic inner fender as the old ones won’t work. The part
number for the pop-pins Honda 91501-S04-003 ($5 each)

Google “honda pilot water leak wire harness” and then click on “PDF – ATB
34469 Pilot Water Leak”. This is a note from Honda to the dealerships on
how to fix this leak. The wire harness has to be wrapped with electrician’s
tape in order to stop the leak. I was able to remove the plastic inner
fender enough by removing 6 of the plastic pins and by turning the front
tire to the extreme right. Each of those plastic pins cost $5. There are
supposed to 14 pins in the inner plastic fender.

So did this fix your problem?

This is a note to the maker of the video. Can you change the title of your
video to read “Honda Pilot water leak on passenger floor or driver’s floor
(wire harness)” . The title change will get you more hits. I spent a lot of
time searching on the internet and there are only a couple of videos like
this out there. There are a lot of leaking Honda Pilots out there and Pilot
owners are spinning their wheels on these forums not being able to find the
cause of the water leak from the fender area

Jake Allen says:

Yes. completely fixed.
