How to Diagnose and Repair a Misfiring and Rough Running Honda Fit

Video showing my methodical approach on how to fix a common problem with the Honda Fit where the engine will misfire when idling or in more extreme cases will stall the engine.

The Honda Fits were known to have a problem with their ignition coils weakening with age and mileage. As the coils “wear out” they can no longer produce the strong spark needed for a higher than average compression engine which results in a weak misfire that isn’t sufficient enough to trigger the ECU to store a misfire check engine code. The misfire progressively worsens with time and in the most extreme cases render the vehicle un-driveable.

If not promptly repaired long term damage to the engine can occur where unburned fuel will damage the catalytic converter as well as result in uneven wear on the motor due to uneven compression forces from a weak cylinder.

Generally speaking the coils rarely all fail at the same time with usually 1 or 2 coils failing around the same time. The sooner the problem is identified the easier it is to troubleshoot and fix.

The repair is easy and relatively inexpensive to complete and certainly far cheaper than paying a mechanic or a dealership to look into the issue.

Are there only 4 ignitions coils on 2007 Honda Fit engine? or 8? any ignitions coils in the front? If I want to replace them all?

Joel Weinert says:

Way better than 50/50 chance, in my experience, that it's the connector, not the coil pack. Slightly twist the tabs on the coil pack and save yourself some money and have less failures. Also note that the camshaft sensor uses the same connector, so when the camshaft timing code shows up, the same fix works.

Gary Nixon says:

I like your video did you check the other 4 ignition packs under the engine cover

Really helpful . Thanks

Good video. Kudos for doing this in mid winter. I waited for the spring and I started with cylinder 4. LOL. And yes the volume was low.

Tilo Kirchner says:

Hey man, my fit makes the same noises! But i have the idsi engine. Next week i try your tip. Thanks. Greetings from Germany.

Great video. Appreciate it.

I can see the part number (30520 PWC S01) at 6:58 but can't see what brand it is. When I look at RockAuto's selection, several brands have that same part number but not the HItachi IGC0053, which is denoted as the "Actual OE part." Curious which brand you used? Also curious why you didn't replace all 4?

Cory Engel says:

The best way to film the shudder is to show the engine while running. The whole thing shakes like crazy.

XtremiTeez says:

Honda Fits don't have coil packs. Each spark plug has its own individual coil. A coil pack has more than one coil in it, like a six pack of beer has six beers or a wolf pack has more than one wolf.

Straightforward, common sense approach. Good, instructional video and anyone with good mechanical aptitude and basic hand tool experience can facilitate this repair by following this gentleman's advice. One nit-pick: volume was a bit low, but that is probably my laptop. Thank you for a good, solid basic repair video. Regards, Ambroid

hi just wanted know the rattling sound the car makes at 6th minutes onwards is the sound of what actually..??

TwwGigi says:

is a coil pack the same as fuel injectors? my check k engine light is on, and autozone says it the fuel injectors and misfire in 3 &4 spark plugs.

ZORO23 JORDAN says:

thanks for this vid! im about to do this if i have my time. any links where i can order this ignition coil packs online?

dnnich says:

I just replaced plugs I had the same problem but not all the time. I have 200,000 km on my 2008 fit. I removed the last plug by hand didn't have to use the ratchet. The coil had soot running up the center post and the plug had soot along one side of threads. I hope thats it but I'll keep an eye on this if it persists. Thanks for the video.

yes, this is what mine is doing.
