Honda EU2000i Leaking Oil and Won't Run – Found in the Trash

Honda generators are known for their reliability. Could this one be the exception? Apparently the prior owner thought so because he threw it away. Even broken Honda’s have value. Is this one broken? Lets find out.

I no longer use Harbor Freight Super Heavy Duty Degreaser in my ultrasonic cleaner. Harbor Freight changed the recipe. The bottle previously stated “NON-CORROSIVE”. Now it says “CORROSIVE”, “do not user on Aluminum”. It now damages most carburetors.

@racheljohnson4692 says:

The smoke was most likely blow-by oil from being seriously overfilled. Glad to see the smoke went away.

@racheljohnson4692 says:

If only it had an hours meter. I wonder if that thing has even been run 10h. What a find!!!! I can’t believe people chucking that. I want one for camping tbh

@colepegelow63 says:

Idle jet needs to be tapped one size larger. The early model eu2000i units were way to lean from the factory for some reason idk why but that always fixed them for me.

@davidhollfelder9940 says:

Clean the carb and adjust the valves.
Pour the fuel through a Mr Funnel water separator.

@UpInSmoke54 says:

It's not only water at the bottom it contains ethanol also so the octane rating will be lower for the remaining fuel.

@acmeopinionfactory8018 says:

That fraying has nothing to do with multiple starting attempts.
This is a design problem on these generators.
The cord frays because of vibration when running, at the entrance to the rewind cassette.
I've owned half a dozen two thousands and twenty two hundreds and ALL of them do this, given enough run time.
After much grief, like cutting the cord and re-knotting it several times, winding up with a cord so short that the generator becomes hard to start as the cord reaches it's end on the rewinder before the crank can make a revolution,or applying a sleeve of heat shrink tubing with adhesive inside, which will fail as the constant heat inside the generator will perish it or soften it and then it migrates from the application site, sometimes will lodge in the exit ferrule at the pull start escutcheon.
The fix is to allow the cord to fray just enough to be able to determine where it is, then coat the area with superglue using a bit of waxed paper to smooth it on. Only about an inch needs to be coated. This hardens the cord while not appreciably increasing it's diameter.

@DeadKoby says:

That's a good find indeed. Even if the engine was somehow wrecked, I'm sure the parts would be appreciated. Nice that it was saved and fixed…. its a shame when good gear meets the grave.

@BKD70 says:

James, maybe you did, but you didn't show checking the oil after being run… it may have stopped smoking because there isn't any oil in it. Not likely, but possible.

Give it a good snort of Sea Foam in the fuel and let it run at light load where it is running mostly on the pilot circuit for a couple of hours. That will clear up any crud left over from the water… I've had good success doing this.

I'd like to find a set of those hollow-ground drivers. I think Bald Eagle is kaputchnick.

@josephcooksley3219 says:

Interesting , what do you use in the ultera sonic cleaner bath as a cleaning agent ???
Great run thru basic steps … yes the Methonal fuel mix is a night mare but until we either Use Lpg or other gas like hydrogen we are going to have issues …
I use meths often to get rid of water in the fuel Tank and works very well lol … …

Great problem solving steps and interesting the additional clean cycle didnt improve the out come markedly yes nothing like over filling the Oil sump to kill a Motor smiles ….

@lanceseward2239 says:

Could the carb flooded and dumped gas into the crankcase causing the overfill of the oil?

@kevinklassen8199 says:

We would love it if you would put a bore scope in every cylinder during inspection to see the wall condition and to read the spark plug. We all look forward to the oil getting checked before testing

@methods-SE says:

Now we're to the tiny holes in the carburetor by the butterfly.

@russbryan1089 says:

On mine after it sitting unused for a long period of time would idle unevenly. Adding some choke would smooth it out. After removing float bowl and float I removed the jet, cleaned it and reassembled. It fixed the idle. I’ve had to do this a couple of times over the years I’ve owned it.

@MARKE911 says:

What a great find. Definitely jealous of the quality and consistency of great work you put in to make it run and look almost new.

@alanarmstrong2323 says:

Nice little generator for camping .

@DYLANTRIES says:

Think between the water and the over full oil, it had oil and water going into combustion chamber not allowing it to run

@blakefindlay1870 says:

I love that method of getting a rough idea for leak down that you did by seeing if the engine maintains that tension on the recoil on the compression stroke. I’ll be trying this in the future

@MrKeithsplace says:

It was probably run low on oil, then way over filled and loaded. The muffler up with oil.
Might check that spark arrester screen in muffler outlet, a clogged screen causes more problems with smooth running than you’d think. All that oil blow by will defiantly carbon them up.
I just wish I could find half the finds you get.
