2004 Honda CRV * Removing the Starter!

2004 Honda CRV * Removing the Starter!

This is by far the worst experience (price and labor) I have ever had replacing a starter! The dealership wanted $835 (with tax-no labor) just for the starte…

I tried to post a video response with my video but don’t know what happened
to it so do a youtube search for it titled 2005 Honda CRV starter and you
can see my 2 1/2 minute video. It’s a tight squeeze getting your hand up
there but it is a lot faster than taking off the intake

TJinSG says:

I took it out through the bottom. It might look impossible but it is not
and it is a lot faster than taking off the manifold. It is a tight space to
work in but it is a whole lot better than the manifold.

Waldemar Kowalski says:

I had mine replaced today. 2002 CR-V. Dealer part was $600 so I purchased a
new jobber part for $200. Not a rebuilt. Took my mechanic 1.25hours and he
did the repair from underneath the car…wasn’t easy but it can be done.
Total cost of replacement including labour. $280 (I gave him an extra $20)

Seja Madden says:

see below. Take off cover to intake manifold. Take 6 bolts out of intake
manifold. Take out 1 bolt on top of intake under fuel injector. Undo 2
electric plugs. slide manifold over as far as possible toward battery. Work
on starter. I needed breaker bar. Not great room to work on starter, but
you have good view. Goes back together fast. recommend universal joint on
sockets and plenty of extensions.

daisybites says:

I have no idea how you removed it from the bottom, I took the cover off and
it looked impossible, then I went to the dealership, looked at their shop
manuals, it shows that is has to be removed from the top

I feel your pain. I am holding my comment back, and should not toss my
anger at you. Great job, I weighted my options. And gave to a shop. to been
told my starter bolts are seized. only way to get the job done is to DROP
the transmission. 3 hr labour, and 5 hours to drop a tranny.5000.00 for the
starter minimum 500.00 for te trans not included. I also saiddo my Ball
joints.. I am not upset, I am happy I found out this way. but to be honest.
I feel it is not right at all.

I just got done working on my neighbors crv. He needed the starter
replaced…. By far the worst time i have ever had working on a fucking
car… The engineers need to be shot in the face.

TJinSG says:

See my video titled here on youtube “2005 Honda CRV Starter”. I tried to
paste the link but it won’t take it here in the Reply section. I think it
is the same from 2002 to 2007. Take off the shroud under the bumper and you
can find the starter. There is a sensor that has to come off and nothing
comes out of the sensor hole as it is a closed hole. There is a long bolt
on the backside of the starter that you need a 3 or 4 inch extension on
your ratchet and a 13 mm socket and that’s pretty much it.

Turo Zavala says:

I’d be so pissed

daisybites says:

@RigsPGT yes, I had to unbolt the intake, I never was able to pull it
completely ot of the car, even after removing the hood latch, but I was
able to slide it over enough to the drivers side to make enough room to get
to the starter

diulaylomochohai says:

TJinSG, can you add anymore comments to answer daisybites? i think i need
to replace my starter as well

rudewaggy says:

Thanks for this video,I did mine last night took me 2 hour overall.

Trex12313 says:

Got the manifold off , starter out but the local doesn’t have my starter.
Ordering one for $160 with core charge but free shipping. Glad I have
second vehicle.

gizmo20201 says:

took me about 15 minutes to get off the intake… there is no access to the
rear bolt through the bottom, go through the top.. only took me 1 1/2 hour
to go through the top including the 40 minutes i spent trying to get it out
the bottom.. maybe if u got baby hands, TjinSG

RigsPGT says:

Wait, you had to remove the intake manifold to get to the starter? Was
there another way to get around it without touching the manifold? My
friends CRV cranks slow even with a new battery and the other day the car
wouldnt start at all. He left it there for 15 minutes, tried it again and
it started. Looks like it will be a day full of joy for me 🙁

djwak59 says:

I was just checking this vid out ‘cus I’ve got an Element, but it shows me
nothing but pictures and a bar band soundtrack, no real “how to”.

johnnywu2 says:

for removing the intake manifold… just did this so posting while fresh,
take off intake tube, three bolts and two nuts to take off manifold, left
side one electrical plug, two small vacuum hoses, right side three
electrical plugs, you can leave vacuum hoses attached, they are underneath
and hard to get to… you should be able to reach starter and move manifold
around enough so you can reach the starter. Way easier than going from
bottom really.

RigsPGT says:

Same here, did the job 2 days ago and i couldnt get the intake out even
after separating the throttle body and removing the hood latch. Now im
having a CEL on the dash which comes back even after resetting it.. My
friend didnt write the code down when he checked it by Autozone but i’ll
look into more details tomorrow. He mentioned the code had to do with the
intake manifold which i think i might have missed a sensor or smth.

Seja Madden says:

Easiest way for me was the intake manifold. Took me 5 hours all together.
Take battery and box out. Take out breather tube for air filter. Undue the
upper radiator hose at the front only Take out tube from filter to intake.
Take 4 bolts out of that hold throttle body.

diulaylomochohai says:

TJinSG, can you add anymore advice for daisybites?

TJinSG says:

Good News, Bad News – Good News, the starter can be taken out from the
bottom. You have to take off the plastic shroud just below the front bumper
then you can look up and see the starter. It’s tight working there but you
can do the job in about 1 1/2 hours. Bad news for anyone who went through
all the work to take off the manifold. I almost started to go from the top
but did more looking and found I could, and did, do it from the bottom.

Kerry Diomandes says:

cost me 650 to replace starter and when I went to pick it up the check
engine light appeared, now they want 250 to fix that. They said they went
threw the bottom and never touched the intake manifold. I’m pisses Next car
