I have a 1997 Safari (truck)van and my EGR is up at the front.Took me a bit
to find it.The guy that was at the Dealership pointed out what it looked
like with the Doghouse off.He was wrong…lol. He said it was in the same
place as yours.But…NOT
I have the same engine. mine just started sputtering at low rpm but at high
rpm its fine what could it be?
After that oven grill cleaner wash the part with water.
Thanks for the video. It helped a lot. My 94 Astro VIN W has the EGR valve
on the front of the engine, so I didn’t have to take the inside engine
cover off. I cleaned it and it works well. You saved me a few hundred
dollars, I’m sure.
I cleaned mine with an oven cleaner spray it cost me $0.99 cents at the 99
cents store I sprayed it let seat for 15 mints. brushed with a used tooth
brush do this 2 times and came out super clean.
“Unless you come across another van, then its van vs van.” You made my day.
Thank you! 🙂 (ROFL) Now, I go out to my 1993 S-10 Blazer to find MY EGR
because I honestly feel like it has been doing this for a loooooooooooong
time.. I hope it is in the same place?? ….
Well I am in the middle of replacing the alternator on my 95 Safari. It
looks like I will need to remove the ‘dog house’ engine cover so I can gain
access to the infamous ‘third’ bolt that holds the back of the alternator
to some kind of bracket. Thanks for your videos. They’re clear and helpful.
Uhhh…..that would be the coil wire……
Are You supposed to put M&M’s in the hole before You reinstall the device?
:oD Good tutorial.
helped alot …thank you!
Very Helpful and super funny. Thank you!
So nice of you to comment back. Yeah dude I` been trying to use my fingers
for about the last hour. I even took the cruise control out of the way and
the pvc vacum. I can put the bolts in no problem. So its not stripped out.
But when I try to put the gasket and EGR back on no way! Never seen such a
easy job go so wrong. I been turning wrenches for 32 years. First EGR valve
though. Gonna talk to a mechanic today about it! These two bolts are
driving me nuts! lol…
You’re welcome. I’m glad I could help.
@KonfusedMind I’m not sure. It would probably cause your Check Engine light
to come on. I don’t know what other damage it would do.
Maybe a wobble socket and a air wrench will do it?
By following your advice i was able to save having to take my 92 Astro van
to the shop. I don’t know what it would have cost to have it repaired, but
the way things are now days its always a good feeling to fix things
yourself and save money at the same time. THANKS LOTS. AND GOD BLESS
Thanks! I was afraid there might be some kind of gasket in the electric
valve mechanism that would be damaged by the carb cleaner, so I didn’t use
it.
Mine kept getting stuck open when i pressed on the gas, i am getting way
better gas mileage too
You’re welcome.
You’re not cleaning it in the vid. Just breaking loose the carbon. To
really CLEAN it, you need to remove the carbon with a solvent. In that
case, you’d be wise to clean the egr tube and the port on the exhaust as
well, or you’re just leaving a large amount of carbon in the system.
How can I clean & fix a stuck egr on a 3.3L chrysler town & country? I
tuned it up & it ran good for a few months, but now has started idling
rough & mpg has dropped an average of 5 mpg.
Yes. Gas mileage is terrible when the EGR gets stuck open.
6:55 lol, but there are more americans driving without insurance than there
are illegal immigrants
@HogBranch Awesome! I’m glad you found the video. It’s amazing what a
difference it makes.
Yeah. I do that often, but it doesn’t help with the stuck EGR valve
problem. It does help the van pass the emissions test every other year.
Thanks. The van has been misfiring and stinking like gas lately, and I know
it isn’t the EGR valve. I tried replacing the ECU, fuel injectors and fuel
pressure regulator, but it didn’t help. I wonder if the ignition control
module is causing the problem. The Check Engine light doesn’t turn on, but
there is definitely something wrong. Would a bad ignition control module
cause these problems?
You trippin lol
what if i want to disable the egr valve ? if i put a piece of metal betwen
the egr and the manifold? can it help or damege my engine ?
After some research I got my van started. The problem was the rotor was not
alined with the #1 spark plug. The distributor cap is a flat one, and you
have to look under it to follow the #1 plug path in the cap.
Just went out there got it on with no problems and new fingers and
determination. But It still runs like crap. Got to goose it to get it
started. And its back firing when It doesn`t want to start. Once the pedals
going It gets RPMS. won`t idle and just running near death! And another
thing the engine temp never gets near 200 and heater not very hot! Can`t
see the thermostat having anything to do with start up trouble. Junk yards
calling it but only had plates on it six months.
@jazzy3548 You’re welcome. I hope it works.
Yeah I had the same problem with my suzuki swift convertible (Geo metro ).
The exhaust return pipe would clog up causing rough idling. I put a tin of
that cleaner in the carburator every 2500 KM just to keep it from cloging
up to fast.
Thanks
I like that stuff too.
You didn`t show what a bitch it is to put the darn thing back on!
Don’t forget about the website for vanners… astrosafari (all one word)
dott comm
THANKS MAN…GOING TO GIVE IT A SHOT!
You’re welcome.
@pigeontamer8 You’re welcome! I’m glad it worked for you. When the EGR
valve gets stuck, it feels like your whole engine is ruined, and you think
it will be really difficult and expensive to fix, so it’s good to know you
can fix it yourself for free.
Did you remember to re-install the M&M wrapper back where it should
connected to the engine?
I did.
@cherrywrecker Good to know. Thanks.
