Chevrolet Silverado or GMC Sierra (2008 – present) – New Battery Install

Learn how to install a new battery in a Chevrolet Silverado or GMC Sierra. We’ll show you how to replace/change/remove with simple tips and tricks to help get you started!

Tool List: 13mm wrench, 10mm wrench, Torque Wrench

-This video shows a 2014 GMC Sierra battery replacement.
-This video can also provide battery replacement guidance on model years 2008-2023. The Group size H6, H7 and H8 battery are used depending on your trim level and year. The general install steps are the same though.
-2007 and later Silverado’s and Sierra’s use a side terminal Gr 78 battery. See our video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p99JOlegHPg
-Make sure you get the correct battery for your application! https://www.autobatteries.com/en-us/how-to-choose-your-car-battery-replacement/car-battery-group-size
-Most newer Silverado and Sierra’s require an AGM battery to power all the onboard electronics. Even if your vehicle did not come with an AGM battery, you can upgrade to an AGM battery for up to 2x the life. AGM can be found at most retail outlets. You can learn more about AGM here: https://www.autobatteries.com/en-us/battery-technology-types/absorbent-glass-mat-agm-battery

The use of a memory saving procedure will keep the memory alive on the vehicle’s computer during the battery replacement procedure. Referring to our Memory Saving video will provide you with various memory saving procedures that can be used according to vehicle manufacturer’s requirements. https://youtu.be/vSP3ShcaFgQ

Some late model vehicles must have the 12 volt battery registered with the vehicle’s Battery Control Module or Computer after replacement. See these videos on Battery registration and coding for more details on the procedures at https://youtu.be/TGKohKZHzr0 & https://youtu.be/cxOK_DczRGg

Although this video may provide you with the basic procedures, we recommend that you check with the vehicle manufacturer’s step-by-step procedures found in your vehicle’s service/repair manuals.

Always wear safety glasses and gloves when working with or near batteries.

2015 Sierra 1500. Purchased used 4 days ago. Brought home Friday. It sat outside for 2 days in -15 to -20 temperature. Remote started on Sunday (2 days later) with no issues. Didn’t go anywhere, just fired it up because of the cold weather. Started it up the following day (Monday) and drove it for approximately 20 minutes. Parked on the street for 20 minutes then moved it into the garage for the night. Went to remote start it this morning and it just clicked. Message said “low battery” on message centre. Wouldn’t start after trying with key. What would cause this if it fired up no problem outside Friday to Monday night and wouldn’t start after 1 night in the garage?

Excellent tutorial. First time changing a battery in this truck and it is more involved than any other battery I've seen. The fuse panel attached to the positive terminal with the jumpstart post is daunting when first seen. Thanks for your help in making this video.
