happened to my buddys car today. Glad I found this video I’ll tell you what! From a fellow redneck, you sir, know how to speak my language! Very easy to understand and follow. Thanks again boss
Omg, I’m so glad I found this video. This happened to my car today and I’m so afraid that it is going to be super expensive to fix.
Rubber bands came from fresh broccoli
Where did you get those rubber bands? I have that same issue but using zip ties instead I’m embarrassed to say. I’m thinking a rubber band would be a better fix. Thanks.
Thanks for the video! My wife called me at like 1am when she rolled into a gas station, put the car into park, and then it kept rolling and wouldn’t start. I thought the transmission was toast! Snapped the little grommet thingy back on to get home (at least). It seemed kind of tight… Should I replace it anyway? Or “zip tie” that sucker?
Thank you, very helpful video and awesome sound effects lol
thanks my friend you saved my Pontiac Sunfire
Thanks
I twisted mine around to show it on video.1996
I noticed in your video that your cable connects to the shifter nipple on top. I’m working on a 2001 Cavalier and the nipple faces down. What year car are you working on?
Same part worked great for me!!
Awesome video. I owe ya’ll one.
I had the exact same problem with my ’98 Z24 but I used a metal adjustable hose clamp and over a year later, it’s still holding, though I have the 4 spd. auto and can’t get down to 1st. gear, but you can the rest, though. And the cost was $1.
Thank you! Rubber band did the trick…
sorry for the late reply… we got them from either AutoZone or Advanced Auto Parts
The lever that the nipple is on shifts from right to left. I have a 95 cavalier. My park (P) position is all the way to the right when facing the car looking under the hood. Then clicking towards the left it R,N,D etc. Make sure it’s clicked to the park position (in my case all the way to the right) BEFORE you put it on.
The grommet is really hard to remove so I decided to try the rubble band trick. IT WORKED! Thank you! .I have two rubble bands on it now until I can get that stubborn grommet out.
Thanks so much for this video. This just happened to my 1995 cavalier today. Had to call AAA and the guy showed me it was the shifter cable. I priced the cable online at advance auto parts. Cheapest price $42.00. I think I’ll try the junkyard first.
I just found out these grommets are available on AMAZON.com as “add-on” items. Good to know if you can’t find at an auto parts store.
you bring it to a shop, it should not do that by just changing this gromet.something is out of wack.
how do i figure out which setting is park, reverse, drive, etc.? already got it on but the car itself will not stay in place when i think it is in park. What should i do? its a 93 camaro with 4 spd auto
if its an automatic it may need fluid
i dont know this video is to fix the shifter gromet .
Watch the video & pay attention.

Thanks so much for posting this video. I have the same exact problem. I called Chevrolet and they wanted $250 to replace cable. I went to Advance bought some grommets and replaced the bad one. Fixed for $2.50!
Wat do I have to do to get it to work
Okay I have a 03 cavalier and it won’t get in gear
You’re welcome
Thank you sir had this problem happen last night.
YOU ARE AWESOME BRO!!!!
Wow, My Chevy messed up today, This is a very big deal to repair and get me down the road. Thank you for posting this data. God Bless sir. Rock-On young man.
Sir this happened to my cavalier today…your video helped me tremendously!! I used 2 hair ties and it worked temporary fix. 🙂
VERIFICATION: the plastic grommet IS available from AutoZone or Discount in DORMAN kit # 14041. ONE grommet in the kit IS indeed an “exact” fit! —(all others will be too big or too small) It easiest to remove the heat shield under the master cylinder for more work space. It’s also easiest to remove the shift arm from the transmission and assemble the cable end to the shift arm and reinstall on the trans ***Be 100% certain ALL the broken plastic pieces are removed from the cable end housing!!
Kick ass , thanks for the info…:-)
DORMAN KIT# 14041 Does Work. Used it today. Works great. $7.49 @ advance autoparts, $6.99 @ Autozone in my Area. Used 2nd to the smallest that came in the 5 piece kit. Was really hard to get everything snapped together but it does go together for sure. I put the plastic piece from the kit on the metal nipple first and pushed down really hard with a wooden stick then I placed the shift linkage over plastic piece and pushed really hard again with wooden stick. Everything works great now
No, I just used trial and error and eventually found the right one. It was easy to determine which one it was. Not too big, not too small. Hope this helps, easy as pie 😉
Do you remember which of the bushings you used? I just bought this kit today.
Thats great im glat i was able to help.
Thank you so much!! my boyfriend was about to have a panic attack, but thanks to your video he is ok now!!! and we save money!!!
Wow! Thanks. I have a 2003 Pontiac Sunfire and I still no problems. I’ll keep my eye on this problem
Google Dorman Help! 14041 This little kit contains a bushing that is the right size to fix the cable. I bought one from O’Reillys today for $6 and fixed a 2003 Cavalier. Guaranteed to work.
