I am a mechanical MORON and I even understood this procedure. Thanks a lot
for explaining everything so well and showing some “finer points” in
prepping the part for re-assembly (cleaning, greasing, etc…). Well done.

NO! don’t use grease! use silicone lube. it won’t eat the rubber boot

i have changed fluids and tranny filters on a bunch of my trucks and cars
and never had that problem i would like your take on this weird subject

lazybones9688 says:

off subject.. what is your take on people who never change the tranny fluid
on 98’s and back..i hear some people say dont wake the sleeping giant
because the old fluid and sludge help friction. and they had some cars come
and after the tranny filter and fluid change the car tranny just died
with(120.000)miles… what i did was drain a quart top it with fresh fluid.
and do that over some time..good mechanics told me this. because i have no
idea if the previous owners ever had it changed?

are the caliper guide pins designed to slide in and out a little? I forgot
to lube mine up recently and didn’t wash off the new rotors, which smoked
for about a day. Is that bad?

Good job on the video – one of the best ones I’ve seen

Also, letting the pads get too wore out will cause the caliper piston to
get over extended which isn’t good. If you drive it around with the brakes
draging it could warp the rotors, wear out your new pads, and damage your
wheel bearings from the heat. Also, make sure you grease those pins. It’s
very important

Thanks for the views. I have been a commercial vehicle mechanic for 10
years. I have hung the calipers of 10k pound gvw trucks from their rubber
lines and they are fine. It will never affect the caliper. That’s not
correct. If any damage is done to anything it would be your rubber line. If
the rubber gets damaged from a light aluminum caliper like the grand ams,
it was probably bad to start with. They can always be hung using a bent up
coat hanger like in my ford truck brake video.

95z28410 says:

After you drive the car you should feel some heat eminating from the front
wheels. Without burning yourself, you can just get an idea of how hot the
air is that is coming out of your rim. Compare all the wheels. If one’s not
really hot or smelly and they are all 4 similar, you might be okay.

95z28410 says:

If the rotors stopped smoking you might be okay. I’d just keep an eye on
them but you need to grease those pins.

95z28410 says:

Yes, the guide pins allow the caliper to float over the rotor and move
freely. They also allow the caliper to move as the brake pads wear to take
up the slack and keep the brakes adjusted. The rotors shouldn’t smoke. If
they are smoking your calipers may need replaced because the caiper piston
is not moving freely in its bore which is holding the brakes applied. That
is common with wore out calipers.

i’d recommend putting on some latex gloves.
