DIY How To Remove Replace A Starter (GM 3400 V6 and other vehicles)

DIY HOW TO PULL YOUR OWN PARTS AT A SALVAGE YARD AND SAVE MONEY while keeping your vehicle on the road! How to remove/replace the STARTER from a 2004 (2000-2005) Chevy Impala. This process is the same on the list of GM vehicles listed below as well as the tools needed and instructional steps.

All vehicles equipped with the 3400 V6 Engine:
 1996 Chevrolet Lumina APV
 1997-2005 Chevrolet Venture
 1996-2004 Oldsmobile Silhouette
 1996-1998 Pontiac Trans Sport
 1999-2005 Pontiac Montana
 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero
 1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am
 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala
 2000-2005 Chevrolet Monte Carlo
 2001-2005 Pontiac Aztek
 2002-2005 Buick Rendezvous

TOOLS NEEDED FOR THIS JOB:
3/8 ratchet
¼ ratchet
¼ extension
3/8 extension various lengths
8mm socket
10mm socket
13mm socket
15mm socket

QUICK PULL TIP: Make sure to hold onto the starter with one hand while loosening the bolts with the other so the starter doesn’t fall down on you.

STEPS FOR REMOVAL:
1. Remove the plastic inspection cover by unbolting the three 10mm bolts.

2. Loosen the two 15mm bolts that hold the starter to the engine.

3. Remove the nut that holds down the skinny wire to the solenoid using an 8mm socket.

4. Remove the nut that holds the large wire to the solenoid using a 13mm socket.

5. Continue removing the 15mm bolts that hold the starter to the engine while holding the starter with one hand and removing the bolts with the other.

REPLACE: Follow the steps above in reverse.
