1991 – 2007 GM Truck & Van Vortec Starter Motor Replacement (Chevy, GMC & Cadillac)

Replacement of the starter motor on a 5.7L Vortec V8 due to a problem with click but no crank condition. The procedure is illustrated on a 1998 Chevrolet Cheynne K2500 pickup, but the approach is the same for any 5.7L V8 and very similar for the 4.3L V6 and 5.0L 6.5L 7.4L V8 engine displacements as well. I provide GM ACDelco part numbers for all engines.

You will need 15mm, 13mm, and 8mm sockets to perform this repair. Before replacing the starter motor, be sure to verify that your battery is not at fault, and that your battery cables are not at fault. This is also a good time to clean battery terminals and battery cable connections of corrosion.

Mr, KrAmWiCh CMDY says:

Is the starter on a 2008 Chevy Silverado 1500 5.3L V8 2wd in the engine block or the transmission bell housing?

Bill Harris says:

I greatly respect your method of these informative videos

Tiny wire going to the starter is the ignition wire. I was having a really hard time with heat soak. I tried everything but nothing worked. I bought mini starter, remote solenoid, new battery cables, new body grounds. I took the starter off and pulled the little wire and knock sensor wire which was connected. I pulled up the back of the engine and black taped once and then heat shrink tube over that..then i black taped twice and then zipped tied the tape ends. I took all the mini torque starter and other crap off. Put the 75$ O'Reilly special starter on again. Never had a problem again..454 7.4l in 118° weather hasn't fased it.

Nice job. Clear simple, not missing steps as many DIY videos are.

Kevin Peterson says:

My 1977 chevy 350 starter went out due to heat soak. And it has the same bolt pattern as yours staggered 168 tooth flex plate. Just needing to know if this starter would work for me? And is this starter still working? Thanks!

I've had my '95 k2500 for years but if it had a heat shield, it was long gone before I got it. That's probably what cooks the solenoids.(exhaust heat)
