Niles, the aftermarket GM HEI distributors I have seen aren't very good for reliability out of the box. I would check for slop and free play first then get the timing advance set where it wants. It is possible to get a new HEI with the shaft bushing too big. The original Autolite can be rebuilt with the mechanical and vacuum advance on point. My daily driver is a 65.
