OK…. I’ll never complain again about the high cost of a gear change

aaron mcdonald says:

You don’t need a bearing and race tool or a press and please don’t grind of
any coatings from the pinion. They were put there for a reason. If your
going to show a diy video show us folks how to do it our self’s without all
the fancy uneeded tools. Its simple folks. Use the old races to knock the
new ones in use an oven and freezer to get the bearings on. And make sure
your math is right!

Cintia Bako says:

Great video on the install, nice level of details.
One question if someone can answer. The backlash was measured on the ring
bolts in thsi video. In the FRPP isntall manual shows the measurement
should be taken at the middle part of the ring teeth. Obviously the larger
the radius you measure the larger backlash will be measured for the same
angular backlash. Therefore it is important to measure on the correct
radius.

Hey Bill, great video and mechanical expertise! In your experience
doing this, can you comment on the most common problems a first timer may
have in this situation (has had), and what the key problems tend to be with
this particular work? I thought I would check, as I have done everything
else on cars and trucks, but never worked with the rear differentials;
honestly, as people often cautioned to stay away from it. So, on the
typical 8.8 mustang rears, what are the worst horror stories you may have
heard? I would like to know so that I can hopefully add some more
attention in such areas of the gear changing process. Thanks.

Santiago Baeza says:

Is it really necessary to replace all the bearings and the raise ? Or can
you just swap out the ring and pinion?

jp demolet says:

Did you have to check the pinion depth angle while swapping the gears I’m
planning on swapping my 2.73 to 3.73

Ranoush Qtr says:

my 3.73 is so noisy I think the shop didn’t install it properly 🙁

wilddonkey says:

Would this be the same for a 97 explorer 8.8? Also does the pinion depth
differ if you change gear ratio or would it still use the same shim on the
pinion? thanks

Miki Ram says:

I bought a rear end with 3.73 for my 1989 coupe.like how it takes off , but
because it’s an aod my rpm are a little high. Can I put the old gears on
they same dif.or is it recommended to buy all new?

Richard Whiting says:

Bill, could you be more careful about keeping your hat out of the way,
There were a couple of times you were explaining how to do something, but
all I could see was your hat. Great video! This is not something the
average guy would want to do in his home garage (unless you have an
experienced friend to look over your shoulder).

Driv3ItLikeUStoleIt says:

Great video bill, always helpful. Just one thing, the silicon is always
preferred to go around from the carrier side rather than the outside or
some might have some leaks especially if not cleaned or tightened properly

Pete Montiel says:

Im getting ready get ford racing 3.73’s installed this week on my 2013 5.0
and wanted to know if i need to break them in beofre really getting on them
after install
