Nice kit, they turn a headache into a walk in the park… Check out a kit
made by cal-van tools. They include an air adapter to sit in the hole while
you turn the engine over by hand and pops out on compression. The guide,
reamer and tap are also different in that they don’t have to be inserted
from the bottom of the guide. The reamer also cuts a new chamfer in the
head that the insert sits down in to be flush… they also recommended
JBWELD to lock the insert to the head, and install the insert using the
sparkplug so you don’t have to back anything out once the insert is in…
they also have kits for many other applications. If I recall a lot only
require a new guide and inserts.
Great kit. Did you turn the engine over till both valves were closed before
using the kit ?
Was wondering if you can help me with an issue? I have a 1998 Ford
Expedition and the front driver’s seat makes a clicking noise when I tried
to move it back or forwards is there any way that I can replace only the
motor and not the hold rail? or is there a trick to getting the motor to
start working again?
I’m sure you already knew this, but there are some notes that
less-experienced users should be aware of : what you refer to as the “drill
bit” is actually a “reamer”. When using a reamer, only turn the reamer in a
clockwise direction – NEVER turn a reamer counter-clockwise. Also, continue
turning the reamer as you slowly remove it. You cannot apply too much
grease when using the reamer and tap in this particular application – more
is better. In applications where shavings don’t pose a threat, cutting
fluid is the preferred lubricant; however, grease is better here. Great
video as usual! Thumbs up!
About $220 on Amazon and eBay.
When I worked for Ford I fixed older 5.4’s with the Helicoil a lot !
What types of kits do they make for 04 F350 with 6.0,if any? Thank u.
Can you buy replacement pieces for this kit for the sparkplug inserts?
You mentioned on a 4.6 water getting number 8 cylinder. Is there a fix for
the water problem? Let me know please.
Great review!
Nice job on the review! You did a great job explaining everything from
start to finish….thanks!
Being unfortunately familiar with this job on 5.4s this kit would have made
life much easier.
Great kit also great information on how to fix this problem
Kinda like the Timesert 2v kit I keep around for my crown vic’s. Payed for
itself the first use.
Lisle extractor is the tool for a broke plug on a 5.4 3v, there is no
substitute!
Excellent tip! Thank you.
Wish I knew about this kit before I changed my plugs on my 98 150 with the
4.6 3v. Took it to a friend of my dad’s shop to get them changed fearing
the core plugs… They were the original and the trucks got 187,000 miles
