Hi i will need some help here, I have a 2012 ford E350 van with a 5.4L
engine which had gone through a flood. After getting all the parts new and
following the instructions on timing, i have a problem with the left side
inlet valves touching the pistons on rotating the engine manually. I have
the timing marks all correctly lined up as shown in the manual but this
problem persists. Does this 5.4L engine hav a differrent proceedure? Please
help

Tensioners are on wrong sides… It’s left and right sitting in the car…
Not looking at the front of the motor?!

A good way to oil prime a Ford engine is to hold the accelerator to the
floor and crank the engine. The computer is programmed to shut off fuel
under these conditions. It’s a mode designed to clear a flooded engine. I
do this after every oil change so that the filter and engine never run dry.
It would work just as well for first time starting a rebuilt engine. Crank
the engine for 10 seconds or so and the entire oil system will be
pressurized.

Is this pretty much the same concept for building a 4.6

NO 1.12 O CLOCK CRANKSHAFT KEYWAY-SAFE MODE-ALL PISTONS BELOW DECK. NEVER
TOP DEAD CENTER. 2. THE TWO CENTER LINKS GO IN BETWEEN THE SINGLE DOT ON
CAMSHAFT. 3. THE SINGLE LINKS MATCHES WITH THE DOT ON CRANK. Sorry I didnt
catch this video sooner

Ill check that page out and trust me if there is a issue ill edit the video
but i havnt really noticed any lost power either ill also check with my
buddy thats a ford guru – thanks for the link Merry xmas

stock head gasket has enough room for .030 over

1159 Videos says:

Ill recheck that but in the manual and timing kit it all matched up and
motor runs perfect ?? I do top dead center because the cam lobes are up
means valves are closed , so if your doing it below deck isnt it easier to
mess up timing marks specially for a someone that hasnt done it before?

aode06 says:

It will run and idle fine , wish dimenished power

aode06 says:

please do, because im timing mine now

Ok so my kit showed it double link down low like the video, the factory
manual shows single bright links one for the cam and one for the crank also
crank DOT not key should be set to 6 o’clock position and ill almost bet
thats tdc only way you can mess your valves up is if you dont preset the
cams before you put the heads on left cam is almost 12’oclock in relation
to the head and drivers side is more of a 11’oclock and that will be close
enough not to mess up any valves . Hope that helps

aode06 says:

So your method is fine, you just run a risk of hitting valves when you
rotate the camshafts, or crankshaft, or when you bolt on heads. Either way
engine will run fine as long as the marks match, he said

aode06 says:

also he watched the video, the timing chain tensioners are on the wrong
sides of each head, you have the R Tensioner on the left hand head(sitting
inside car) and the L tensioner on the right hand head(sitting inside car).

what part number head gasket for a 5.4 bored .030 ?

aode06 says:

From Ford MASTER TECH, Turn the crank keyway to 12 o clock so all pistons
are below deck-safe mode. Bolt on your heads.Safe Mode -Nothn hits pistons
Then install both chains(crank single link, cam dot-inbetween double links)
If you put the #1 or any other piston to tdc, you can bolt the heads on, or
position the cam to match the links and valves can smack pistons. They can
bend beyond site of the naked eye. “Always time a modular in safe mode”
