You can just loosen it.
should the tension pulley come off or should it just be loose?
Yes you may end up with a fit issue if it’s not routed correctly. There should be a belt routing diagram located near the front of the engine bay that will show you how to route the serpentine belt. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
If you route the belt incorrectly, it either left you with extra length or too short, am I right?
thank you !
Thanks so much!! My Grandpa was having trouble doing this exact repair on my Taurus- he watched this video and immediately said “Aha! Clockwise!!” and now I have a new timing belt 🙂 So thank you for the video!!!
Thanks for watching. Have a great day! 1aauto.com 888-844-3393 FREE SHIPPING in the lower 48 states!!!
Awesome video…I’m sure it will be a big help when I do this this weekend. Thanks for the tip turning the belt sideways.
We’ll keep this request in mind in the event that we need to make this repair in the future. Have a great day. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
can you make a video on how to change a water pump/motor mounts
I needed to buy a special serpentine belt tool for this. Regular wrench wouldn’t work.
If the clutch is not spinning freely you will most likely have to either replace the clutch or the entire compressor depending upon if the internals move of the compressor.
I followed all your techniques to replace a broken serpentine belt on my 2003 3.0 L Taurus. I checked that all of the pulleys spun freely before putting on the belt as recommended at the auto supply store from where I purchased the belt. Upon starting the car, I got a high pitch whine. It seems as if the pulley on the A/C compressor has seized. If it has, do I have a pulley problem or an A/C compressor problem?
Thanks! I used your alternator video to replace the alternator on my 1997 Taurus. One thing: I could not move the tension wheel at all. No matter how much leverage. Luckily, when I disconnected the alternator, I could slide the belt off.
You may need to access it from under the vehicle.
I have a 2008 ford fusion where the tensioner is behind the wheel… How would you go about releasing the tensioner there?
Yes, this will be the exact same thing for the 3.0L sable.
Is this the same diagram for a 2001 mercury sable? I think so but Im not 100 percent sure.
It could be a worn belt or possibly a worn tensioner. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
Is this what I need to change if there is a chirping sound coming from the passenger side? Thanks
Thanks for the help with the wrench technique, worked great with my ’96 Sable. I had the idler pulley lock up and mess everything up. One hour fix with having to return the wrong size belt! 🙂

Thank you for posting this!
It may be similar.
is this the same for a 1996 engine? somethings are different ive noticed 🙁
