I was struggling with replacing the drive belt for my 96 explorer and found
your instruction video, as soon as I finished the video it only took me
5minutes! Started my engine and the Idler sheared off. I guess I should
have checked my pulleys hahaha. Watching your video on replacing Idler. Got
to get the old bolt out first. I will always check with your site before
starting my next project! Thanks
hello, besides the idle pulley, would the ignition coil have anything to do
with the screeching noise at start-up? and before trying to replace the
pulley, is there a way that i can look at it while being started to
determine if it is indeed the pulley, thanku n advance!!!
@surfndude44 It wouldn’t be a bad idea if it’s the original one. If your
truck also has the original water pump, you may want to replace that too
while you’re in there, and already have it off. Here’s a link to our timing

When i changed my Idler pulley & tensioner pulley on my 2002 explorer i
didn’t disconnect my battery .i never do unless i have to last time i did
it messed up my engine idle made me go nuts didn’t know what was wrong with
my explorer it always wanted to almost stall at a stop but reading info
online i disconnected the battery again for 15 to 20 minutes fixed it

You may want to inspect the other pulleys to see if they’re working
correctly.
You may be referring to the AC compressor pulley.
I have a 2005 ford taurus. It is making a whirring noise coming from the
pulleys. I have replaced the tensioner pulley and it is still making the
noise. What else could it be. It is a 6 cyl. Thanks for any help.
@567dirt8910 If the belt squeals when you start the truck up, it should
either be a bad belt on your Ford Explorer or a worn serpentine belt
tensioner. I would inspect the ribbed side of the belt first for cracks. If
it has a bunch of small cracks throughout the belt you should change it. If
it’s not cracked, more than likely the belt tensioner needs to be replaced.

@surfndude44 There’s not really any trick other than trying to narrow down
what section of the motor the noise if coming from while it’s running.
I got a 5.0 started squeeking aftervchanhing water pump i changed belt and
pullis and still aqueeks i wonder if my new water pump can be squeeking….
I think this will be my next move on my 03 sport trac. The “belt” or one of
the pullys squeals bad in wet weather, Is this a sign of something
particular??? I guess I’ll just remove the belt and test the idler pully
out and see what needs to be done. I’m sure I’m due for a new belt also. As

Thanks for a great video. I have a 2002 Explorer and have this squeak and
replaced the belt tensioner but still have the noise. The serpentine belt
is not glazed or cracked. The noise begins a few minutes after the engine
is running. It sounds like it could be the idler pulley. Is there a trick
to determine exactly where the noise is coming from ?

the belt looks fine, tension feels good as well, if i look at the idle
pulley while some1 starts my car if there any way visible to know that the
idle pulley is failing? and thanku for taking time to respond

the idler on my 94 mazda pick up b4000 seems to be different from the one
shown on the video…the one you replaced…. looks like a hockey puck mine
looks like a small tire rim…does it matter?

The procedure should be pretty much the same.

thanks again, i removed the serpentine belt, all pulleys r tight and spin
upon touching, except for my power steering pulley it moves a bit, so i
figure i need to replace the whole thing considering when making a turn my
steering column sticks(resist) sometimes. but as far as the short noise n
engine knock at start-up, it has completely died. now it makes a noise
(maybe grinding) and wont turn over at all. im lost, n dont have cash for
the shop.
You may want to check the belt to see if it’s worn or cracked. You may also
want to check the belt tensioner to see if there’s enough tension on the
belt.
Is the tension pulley in the same spot on the 5.0’s?
@journalwriter It sounds like you have v belts on your ’94. Obviously you
want to make sure you get the correct replacement and removing the belt
probably involves loosening a pulley or component.

Love your videos every time I need to do anything on my car I check your
videos first. the idler pully look easy to do but I still watch this first
and glad I did cause I didnt know about that lock washer on the back side.
BTW I had to change a bad oil pressure sensor switch and I was surprised
you didnt have a video on that because its a pretty common problem on Fords
it was easy to do but very hard to figure out how to get at it. I know you
would have had a trick or 2 to get it. thanks

It may be the belt tensioner that’s loosing some of it’s tension. When you
did the pump you had to lift up on the tensioner to release the tension on
the belt. This may be what’s causing the noise. I had this happen on a 92
