In this episode we show how to install pistons and new rings into our Land Rover Discovery 4 Gen2 SDV6 engine. Christian also shows how to machine a piston ring install tool and we do a platigauge test on all big end bearings. We show how we document all our measurements and check torque to rotate of the short block. One small step for man but one giant leap for our failed engine repair job.

New rings definately. Pistons – clean, visually inspect and measure to determine possibility for service.
Piston ring gap should always be checked. Pregapped should be OK, but packaging or machining mistakes can happen. I took Automotives in high school. My first job after leaving school was at a heavy equipment wrecker, dismantling heavy equipment and cleaning parts. One of the other guys rebuilt an International engine that started on gasoline and then when warmed up a lever was turned and it switched to diesel fuel. Just after flipping it to diesel there was a crashing noise and they shut it down. A ring on one cylinder butted up tight and pulled the liner apart and it got smashed on the crank and conn rod. He can to ask me if I had heard of measuring ring gap. Farm boy never heard of that and had gotten away with not measuring for 20 years.
I know how ironic you are about spare parts and tools made in China. A huge number of little-known brands sell low-quality components imitating German manufacturers – registering offices in Europe and coming up with names typical of the language of Goethe and Schiller. I dare to assume that you are well versed in the spare parts market in your country, in connection with which I have a question for you (if it’s not too much trouble) – do you know such a company as “Krauf” (13 Immermannstrasse, Dusseldorf, Nordrhein-Westfalen, 40210 Germany), and what could you say about it as a manufacturer of crankshafts for diesel LR. In particular, in their catalog they offer "Krauf CKT0028SW – Crankshaft".
I'm in awe of your attention to detail, and jealous of your machining skills and the tools that you have. It seems, to me, that you're employing the techniques that are used in building blueprinted race car engines? Which brings me to my, possibly contentious, questions. Do you think that your level of skill is necessary for a "mall crawler"? I wonder how many more miles your engine will run compared to desktop mechanics rebuild.
I'm looking forward to the construction of the LR TIME dyno cell. An absorber, a transducer, some foam padding to keep the neighbours happy and you're good to go.

Don’t worry Disco owners your not alone, LR decided in their infinite wisdom to screw 2.2TDCI Puma owners over with their not so public oil pump recall Ford Service action 4S616 or LR Q421 it was a few years ago, but I know of two Puma’s that locked up at speed. There was also cracks on the front axle, where by the crucible / stub axle would detach itself again in motion. Another LR recall, had a new axle fitted, happy days.
