You still have the famous ford ticking. Anyhow what all the parts cost you?
That’s a good looking truck! We’re up against emission testing (failed) & told have manifold leak on ’99 F-150 Triton. This video VERY helpful. Thanks for taking time to post! My husband has the mechanical inclination of tortoise, usually up to me. Our mechanic is great but, it can be time consuming, and other problems arise when you do something like this. I don’t think we have any of the mentioned tools by other posters. Do you know if there’s a list of ones we should have somewhere? Thanks!
how are the ball joints holding up on your truck with that extreme of an angle on the control arms? mine are almostr parallel to the ground but yours have a steep decline. im thinking of going 3″ more on lift with coils (2wd) on top of my 3″ spindles. dont want to replace ball joints ever again lol. about to change them all out due to ripping boots
I bought my studs, gaskets, and EGR tube all at my local NAPA store.
This will sound stupid but where did you buy your bolts and studs?
jack the engine takes 2 minutes. and you can get them all out with 1/2 deep socket and a 1inch 3/8″ extension and a flex head ratchet.
trick to remove cracked studs is with a mig welder. doesnt matter how far they are in i can get them out. takes practice, ive done hundreds of these at work and can replace it in <1hr a side. trick is to jack the engine with a 4x4 piece of wood. take the two 21mm pass side engine mount bolts out. lower the sway bar bushing nuts to the last few threads. hammer in the piece of wood. then use impact gun to zip the sway bar bushing nuts back up and the engine goes up.
newfoundland canada has worst rusty manifolds. I can replace manifold gaskets and hardware in <1hour. Theres a trick to the trade
im doing this now, what a pain in the ass
Wish I would have made a video on the stud removal but I was to aggravated to even think about it like you. I wouldn’t touch this job for anything less then $300
Well I got it done. I cut to old manifold off in pieces with a cut off wheel. I didn’t want to risk anymore broken studs. Them bottom are a pain to get to. There is no room there. The 5.4s have way more room to work with.
no problem man. hope that other side goes easy for ya
That is different Never thought of that. Ill give it a try. I’m doing mine next weekend I’m a little nervous… Thanks a lot for the input appreciate it.
after those two had broken off i took a different approach. I let the truck run for a bit then I sprayed PB blaster on the studs and let them soak for a while. I actually kept the truck running while turning out the rest of the studs to keep steady heat on the studs. they turned out A LOT easier and i did not have any break off after doing it that way
Cool. Sounds like exactly what I did. I also used a right angle drill and left had drill bits. The bits were a pain in the ass to find. One other thing… the studs that weren’t broke off did you just put a socket on them and turn them out? My dads truck I used a 90 degree small air grinder and i ground off all the heads of the studs. Removed the manifold and used Irwin stud extractors to remove them. But it was a lengthy process and I’m looking for other ways.
i had a lower stud on each side break off so there was barely any room to work with. we used a special low-profile drill with a reverse-threaded bit to get those bastards out.
it was impossible to drill flush into the stud so the threads in the head were damaged a bit. once they were out i turned in the new studs with threadlocker to make sure they sat in the head tightly
Thanks for the reply. What did you use to get the broken stud out? And were any of the threads damaged? You have the only video of this on YouTube…I did my dads 01′ screw and it was a pain. Now the the passenger side of my 03′ screw is leaking. The rear lower stud looks like its broke off flush. I’ve done it but I just like to get more insight. Also give people hope when they search your video.
oh yeah i had one stud break off flush with the head on each side. i was way too frustrated to make a video of it. it literally took me a couple hours on each side trying to get those studs out.
Great video? But you didn’t show removing the old studs. I’ve done this before and it was a bitch! I had one break off flush in the head. Did you have any broke off in the head?
