2005 Ford F-150 Pinion Bearing Replacement – Bonus Unkie Scott Footage – Directors Cut

My F-150 pickup had a whine in the rear end most likely due to the fact I did not replace the crush sleeve when I replaced the pinion seal at the front of th…

Lol. NOT 15.ft.#!!!
1.5 ft.lbs or 18 inch-lbs.
Don’t use a torque ‘wrench’ for that.

Emir Zelaya says:

I will be doing this job soon. Did you replace pinion bearing and carrier
races? a friend told me just change bearings and don’t do races. The master
install kit I will buy comes with races.

Cheator40 says:

Late night but job well done.

jevchance says:

Oh, never pull out!

jevchance says:

Now you know why the mechanics make the big bucks. 🙂

gregmporter says:

This truck has 4:10s. From the factory they actually have beefier bearings
all around. You might look for a larriatte rear end and save yourself some
headaches.

ladyowned says:

HI UNKIE SCOTT!…love the beard. My hubby works for gm and comes home
smelling like these oils often. Can’t imagine what a fords rear smells
like….lol…just jokin’ 😉

spelunkerd says:

I’m glad you posted this one, Greg. After the two axles are off, do you
reinstall that middle shaft so the spider gears don’t fall apart as you
pull the whole diff out? When they talk about spider gears falling apart,
how do you keep it together? Do you think this job could be done with only
one person? My rear axle whines, too. It is especially loud when under
power, not when coasting. Was yours like that?

gregmporter says:

That’s why I put this stuff out there… I don’t know jack beandip about a
lot of things, when I learn, I pass it on.

gregmporter says:

Yeah dude. Sulfer for days. That crap just permiates your skin. The whole
house smells like a burning tub of rotten oil.

RobsPackanShine says:

looks like been leaking for awhile

kerobinsonii says:

I’m putting 4:10 gears in my truck so I will get the joy of doing this also
! 🙂

kerobinsonii says:

I have a Chevy ! LOL !

Oscar's BMW & VW says:

Wow! That was pretty impressive work.

gregmporter says:

I hope so to man… That was a lot of work. I’ll tell you though… I’m
willing to try it again if it isn’t right.

kerobinsonii says:

Sounds easy enough…

gregmporter says:

Does it matter??? some adapters, a few extra bolts, a new drive shaft,
modify the ABS sensor, weld on new perches, swap your springs… Piece of
cake right?

spelunkerd says:

That’s good advice. In my videos I try to emphasize that you should never
rely on one source for critical info. I hope people listen. Regarding the
torque, I’ve done that too, misspeaking. You can add an annotation into the
video to clarify what you really mean so that you don’t have to leave an
error in place. Cheers!

tomswonderfulworld says:

You and Unkie Scott did a great job Greg! Great example of tackling a
project and getting it done. Problem solving 101 right here! Your golden on
the next one……….but I hope you never run across the next one!

vw64manyrd says:

thanks for the look inside that differential…good video!

snocrushr says:

Well Greg you are fearless, hopefully the test drive went well. You can
also check bearing pre-load (rotational drag) with a string wrapped around
the pinion shaft and fishing scale to pull the string and see how many lbs
it takes to rotate the shaft.

gregmporter says:

WOW, I would not have thought about that. Good call.

gregmporter says:

Thanks man… Gonna have to revisit it soon.

gregmporter says:

Thanks man. The seal was leaking for about 3 months before I had time to
tear into it. It got oil all over the place. I knew it was bad, so I kept
the oil topped off til I could fix it.

gregmporter says:

No doubt! Scotty is the MAN.

Timetotinker says:

handle it well, your helper is handy to have around……….tony

gregmporter says:

You got that right… It stinks to high heaven back there. Glad it’s over.

gregmporter says:

LOL!!! NO.

TheEZGZ says:

That is a job that is nice to have help. Hope you got it this time.

gregmporter says:

I really hope that’s the last one. I wouldn’t mind doing it again for a
high performance application. I think that would be fun. For a daily driver
though… I’d like to never do this again.

spelunkerd says:

Thanks, Greg.

knikula says:

I can smell that job from here….nasty…

gregmporter says:

Gotta get it DONE!!! That’s the only way I know how.

gregmporter says:

You got that right. I think I saved about a grand. I’ll take the bloody
knuckles every day when I can save that kind of cheese.

gregmporter says:

Yep. They seem to change the way they do everything else though… I like
the clips in the old rears better when they were at the wheel end. MUCH
easier to pull the axles that way.

John Marks says:

I hope you meant to say inch pounds and not foot pounds of rotational drag
.the old school dial inch pound wrenches work best for this . Gear oil
stinks so bad . Can I borrow your helper sometimes ?

gregmporter says:

Thanks man. I hope I never have to see it again.

gregmporter says:

No problem… BTW, the last torque I gave should have been 15-19 in-lbs not
ft-lbs. There are some videos on setting rotational torque/bearing
pre-load. Watch them before you do this job. They show the correct tools
and what it takes to get this job done right.

CountrySideClub says:

Dang.looks like ya got.some busted knuckles and ya got.greased up
lol..great vid as I no nothing about rear ends..well I used to not know
anything till now..lol..great vid Greg..CJ

RobsPackanShine says:

wow you make it looks so easy

Milogarage says:

just to much

Mark Sponge says:

Cant believe they still use clips to hold the axles in….
